The DL/NW deal was in jeopardy when it became apparent that the pilots unions of both airlines would not agree to the seniority integration plan management had hashed out. So in an unprecedented move, the airlines have handed over the reigns to the unions to hammer out their own plan.

Verrrrrry interesting...

Although, I remember reading a number of articles during the Delta bankruptcy about how Delta management was being unusually cooperative with the powerful employee groups rather than just forcing new conditions down their throats...

Is there any evidence other than common sense that this sort of strategy works?

I think Northwest needs to hire some scabs, that will get the merger pused through lickity split. :borat:
