So, a few of us decided to meet at DTW today for the first ever Detroit Spotters spotting trip. It was a great time, all that time and only 1 cop who just told us to move to the other side of the road to get off of private property. Big props to Detroit Spotters member Andrew for letting me borrow his 70-200 L for half the day.

The day was very good, nice and sunny, not a cloud in the sky until we were about to leave. I got about 5 747's, plus we raped BA, getting the departure and arrival and got the LH departure.

Here are some shots:

Interesting note about this next one, I did no sharpening to it at all in Photoshop! (That 70-200 L is amazing):

Really nice work, Matt. Looks like you had a great day. Lots of red tails out that way

Ain't that the truth - a work of art. Were you using the f/2.8 or f/4.0?

2.8 :D

Good stuff!

You have interesting light in some of your shots...is that Photoshop, or does the 700-200 f/2.8 get ridiculously good constrast?

(I was looking at that lens...I'd love an f/2.8 telephoto, but even with a 1.4x teleconverter it's not long enough for NYC spotting, and I haven't heard good things about the 2.0x...)

That was all the light, the sun was bouncing off of the snow on the ground (empty fields on approach) and in a few shots the sun is off of my right shoulder.

Ah, the snow...that's a really neat effect.

Great pictures Matt. The first belly pic of the 747 is my favorite.

Says who??? You really do not need 300mm at Firestone, the Mounds, Cargo Plaza or Plainview Park unless you want to know what color eyes the crew has. Now HoBe, Bayswater & Herman McNeil Park, there I can agree with you the 70-200 w/1.4x is a tad short.

Good stuff there Matt! I'm looking forward to seeing some of those Compass E190's, did you get any?
I love it when we see different parts of the country in these forums.

Thanks guys,

Unfortunately, there are only a few Compass flights flying into DTW (DTW got the CRJ-900's, MSP got the Compass E175's for now, so there are only a few Compass flights into DTW) and every single one I saw they sent to another runway.

And a photo of the members that were there, far left (guy being stupid with no lens on his camera) is Toby, then Andrew, then Nick, and I am taking the photo.
