Spirit Airlines seen close to coming to MacArthur

The Town of Islip is close to completing a deal to bring Spirit Airlines, which specializes in Caribbean flights, to Long Island MacArthur Airport, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Spirit, a low-cost carrier with 23 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, is expected to offer two flights a day from MacArthur to the airline's hub in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Sources who requested anonymity because the deal is not done said the flights could start as early as May 1.

Islip officials hope that Spirit eventually will expand its presence at the airport and offer direct flights to the Caribbean, including to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the sources said.

Town officials said they could not confirm that Islip is in negotiations with the airline. A Spirit spokesman did not return calls yesterday. The sources said the agreement could be solidified within the next two weeks.

Observers called the potential deal a promising development for the airport, which has been hoping to capitalize on the congestion at major New York-area airports by attracting new airlines to Islip.

"I think any additional service, and especially direct service [to the Caribbean], is going to have a very strong positive impact on our tourism and our communities overall," said Moke McGowan, president of the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. "I'm delighted."

Spirit already flies out of LaGuardia, but runway delays there prompted it to consider MacArthur, which rarely has delays, sources said.

As Islip officials look to expand service at MacArthur, they are preparing a major promotional campaign later this year aimed at attracting both travelers and airlines.

The town appointed a new airport commissioner last week, and plans to make several structural improvements this year, including a new surveillance camera system and additional runway lights.

Islip officials have touted MacArthur as a hassle-free alternative to Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports, both for customers who want to fly during peak times and for airlines competing for limited peak hour slots at the larger airports.

Spirit would create competition for Southwest Airlines, which offers 28 daily departures from Islip, including three to Fort Lauderdale.

Southwest spokeswoman Christie Day said her company does not comment on the moves of other airlines. Calling Long Island "a target market for us," she said, "We're really focusing efforts there to continue to grow."

That's interesting...does that route need any more capacity? I know WN runs three or four nonstops a day between FLL and ISP...

DTW-ISP might be a possibility too, NK hub and no competition on that route (without connections)

What gates are they going to use? There are no jetbridges unless they are going to install some in the older part of the terminal.

I hear Southwest will not be using those 4 other gates.

They paid for those gates. Those four orginal gates will be out of commision anyway for awhile as they have to rebuild the ramp. So again it leaves NK without a jet bridge.

WOW! Airbus service to ISP first and Spirit at ISP again. I used to fly Spirit on occasion when convienent as a youth ISP-RSW back when they made their money on the blood and sweat of Mr. Douglas's work.

What happened last time NK was at ISP? When did they leave there?

As mentioned, the only concern is where will they have gates? They will probably end up using the old AA/CO commuter gates for now.

Wonder who would be next in ISP? FL or B6 would be my guess.

Spirit is known for often operating out of the "low rent" area at many airports. Never once seen them have a really nice or impressive gate area, or operating out of the newest terminal at airports with multiple terminals of different vintage.

If they do start service I think they will get a lot of customers to book but wonder how many will become repeat customers ? Many of the folks who fly ISP-South Fla are not used to paying to check a bag or for a soft drink or cup of coffee onboard. As someone who worked for the airline that started ISP-Florida in the 1980's (Northeastern) Spirits polices will not go over well with many. While WN does not serve meals or show movies they don't charge for most of things NK does and the ISP-FLA crowd is now very used to WN's service.

I will agree with LGA...
They are very used to WN's service, and I forgot about Spirit's extra charges. NK may do better with DTW, like nwafan said, but I think WN has all the FLA customers.

Just in time, Spirit just announced they're doubling their bag check fee: $10 for reserved, $20 without reservation.

Seesh, that is pretty harsh. They must be hurting at NK, paying too much for all these planes! The MD-80's were in fine shape, but they dumped them for 319's and 321's. Now they have dumped all but 1 321 (and it is leaving soon) and are ordering 319's.

Unfortunately we never get to see their financial information...

Some might disagree with you Matt

If they flew n/s to san juan or nassau would ISP have to have a complete overhaul of a customs area?

Not San Juan...Puerto Rico is a US territory.

Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan says the flights will begin in May. He noted that travelers can then use the Fort Lauderdale hub to make connections to 23 Latin American and Caribbean destinations where Spirit flies.

The town-run airport, which already features Southwest Airlines service, welcomed more than 2.3 million travelers last year, according to Nolan.

The plans were to lease out the first two most West gates in the new concourse.

Unless they plan further expanssion what is the reason to use two gates? With only two flights a day they'll never have more then 1 plane on the ground at any given time.
