Boeing Co. said U.S. airlines risk not being able to replace their aging fleets in time unless they order new jets this year.
"We're trying to reserve some spots" in the production line for U.S. orders "because we know that has to happen this year sometime," Chief Financial Officer James Bell said Tuesday at an investment conference in Miami Beach.
Given Boeing's record backlog for new planes, timely U.S. orders are needed "to avoid an unmanageable fleet replacement period post-2012 that approaches about 1,000 aircraft," Bell said.
