I was in Flushing on Sunday and noticed that LGA was using the LOC RWY 31 Approach. With a gusty, northwest wind, they usually abandon the Visual Expy 31 Approach and use the LOC Approach instead. While viewing the chart for the LOC RWY 31 Approach, I notice that I-PZV is 2.7 miles. What is I-PZV ? It's not listed as a fixe or a waypoint.

It's the identifier for the localizer.

If you were to tune to the APP freq and turn on the sound for it, you would hear the morse code for PVZ.

I-PVZ 2.7 represents a DME distance from the localizer antenna. The only reason why the 2.7 DME fix is depicted on the chart is so lower minimums can be used on the approach if the aircraft is equipped with operable DME. If the chart read "LOC/DME RWY 31" then the DME minimums would be the only ones listed on the chart since DME would be required to shoot the approach.

You can see the DME minimums reduces the DA an additional 100 feet for all categories, 1/4 mile visibility for category C, and 1/2 mile for category D.

Thanks, I'm a non-pilot but avid aviation enthusiast. I thought that PVZ was a waypoint but I couldn't find it. In my youth in the 50's, it was impossible for me to become a pilot as I wore eyeglasses, wasn't in the military and could not afford private flying lessons.
