ORLANDO, Florida - Rudy Giuliani told supporters Wednesday he is abandoning his bid for president and backing Republican rival and longtime friend John McCain.

Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican and adviser to Giuliani, said the former mayor called him Wednesday morning to tell him of his plan.

"I expect him to be fairly active for McCain. There is a real friendship and respect between the two," he said. A similar call took place between Giuliani and New York Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno, the lawmaker said in a statement.

Giuliani's race was a total joke IMO...How did he think waiting would help him? While he was doing nothing McCain and Romney were building up steam and media attention. Rudy was a good leader but this race was run very poorly. He should look to run for Gov of NY or something. Now only if Suckabee would drop out the picture might be a bit more clear.

Whoever was running the Giuliani campaign should be shot, there is just no way that 1 person could have screwed up that much, he had to have had help.

Rudy will come out of this in good shape. If anything his experience with 9/11 has shown that he can persevere his life's ambitions.
