Got out there early today, and it was cold, but thankfully the wind was almost non-existant. Stayed at Plainview from 7:30 until about 9:50, at which point the clouds deemed it was time to leave. The crowd started arriving between 8:30-9:00 and it was good to meet Brian, Chen, Joe & Adam. I caught a bunch of new ones for me, even at ISO200 they weren't too bad:

I usually don't get to LGA. When they use that runway, how low are they by the time they fly over planeview?

They are already several hundred feet up. However, on hot summer days, I have literally seen MD-80s at the same height over the highway as rwy 4 arrivals.

Like Phil mentioned, they're usually a few hundred feet up, but it all depends on rate of climb which is airplane, configuration, and density altitude specific. If you do the math (trig), runway 4 arrivals on the ILS to 4 should be at 95 ft. MSL (74 AGL) over Planeview park with the glideslope needle exactly pegged.

Going the other way, if a 22 departure rotates in the first third of the runway (2334 feet), a 151 fpm climb at 100 knots will yield the same altitude over planeview (74 ft. AGL) as the runway 4 arrivals on the ILS. Increase the rate of climb to nearly 1500 fpm at 100 knots on the other hand, and you'll find the plane 807 ft. AGL over planeview.

Nice shots everyone and seemed to be a good turnout, would have like to have joined you but was babysitting and was a little cold for my daughters first spotting outing.

I know it was the first time getting 22 departures from Plaineview for some of you and hope you where impressed. It's a very cool and unique vantage point and I am especially fond of the shots of gears coming up and or gear doors closing. To bad the nice early morning light did not last longer in the day.

The US Special schemes did not work out as planned. We do a lot of Saturday only A-319 flying out of BOS to places like SJU/PUJ/AUA/MBJ/CUN etc. A couple of 319's went tech their Sat morning so a couple of Shuttle flights cancelled and 709 (Eagles) left LGA as planned at 0800 but once in BOS was sent to SJU and 742 (PSA) did BOS-DCA-MCO-PIT-SFO so sorry many of you did not get to see a US Special Scheme.

BTW did anyone catch the US Republic E-175 (New Colors) that was airbourne at 1056 ? Was probably pretty high as these birds have good short t/o and steep climb performance.

I saw the E175 land, that was right before I left. The one challenge we all had yesterday was the winter conditions, ie: much shorter takeoff rolls. Most of the A319's & B757's were already starting the eastern bank when going over the park. Thankfully the MD80 climbs like a slug so we all got quite a few nice shots of them to choose from. Eric, sorry I missed you, you must have shown up right when I left.

Nevermind hot days, there was an AA Mad Dog that used a whole lot of runway yesterday morning, and yes, it was about the same alt as an arrival when it crossed the parkway.

Here she is barely lumbering into the air at taxiway AA, the street light giving some altitude perspective...I didn't crop this at all:
