myself and 4 buddies coming to new york in a few weeks time .. more interested in getting reggies than taking pics..
goning ot be at JFK for apporx 3 hours
can anyone help us on whats best to do ...? is it ok to ride around the top level train for a few hours , or would this create problems ?
any tips on where best to go / do most appreciated

I think that would draw attention. I'd use one of the spotting locaitons based on the runway they are using. You can sit in your can and document the regis in comfort.

as we have 4 hours roughly at each end of our trip with no car , this wont be possible
hoping there is some where landside where views are possible ?

From the gate areas in Terminal 7 you have a good view of aircraft arriving on runway 31R and arriving and departing on 13L, however this time of year you are more likely to have runway 31R in use for arrivals.
You will probably have to leave the gate area if you are coming from London to pass immigration and customs in which case you would have to check back in and go through security again assuming your flight back departs from Terminal 7 as well.
