US: Redeem 10,000 Miles, Get $50 Off

Just saw this in an email from US:

Starting October 22, you can reduce the fare of a US Airways roundtrip ticket by $50 when you redeem 10,000 miles. This offer will be valid on all published US Airways roundtrip fares flown in January and February 2008 with a 14-day advance purchase.

That's 20% off a $250 trip. Pretty good deal I think.

The real question is if you can earn miles.

Other airlines have these "cash and miles" deals, but you don't earn miles on the ticket (as if it were an award ticket). While the cash and mile cost benefit ratio is so-so, once you add in the loss of FF miles, it's usually not a good deal.
