I just heard Harrier 1 take offf from Floyd Bennet for UN security....

seems to be a CG security aircraft and is giving the ATC a hassel about climbing to 11,000

You have to wonder why it didnt do this at FRG last time it overran the runway.

Are the runways at FRG asphalt or concrete? Harriers can not do verticle takeoffs on asphalt as it will literally burn it up.

FRG is asphalt according to airnav.com. FBF's helipad is concrete.

Yeah, but you would think a VTOL aircraft could find a way to stop on 7,000 ft. of asphalt.

From what I know about the Harrier's coming from a conversation with a pair of pilots that dropped into SRQ once the Harrier rarely does a pure vertical take off unless it has to. Generally they do a short run if the space is available. They do generally land vertically though from what I was told. I wonder where the Amphib. ship is that the bird came off of is located.

No, they have a good contingent of fixed wing airplanes with security capibilities though.

NKT isn't that far so it may not be off of a ship.

Based upon others' Milair listenings in the Washington area, HARRIER is a helicopter asset that works low and slow TOIs in the area of a CAP. It is not/not a USMC AV-8B.

I was going to say, I would be quite surprised if a Harrier were operating out of Floyd Bennett for any purpose.

The Coast Guard has a few examples of one biz jet type as well as a fleet of C-130s and thats about it for fixed wing aircraft.
