Probably just something in the ground that meteorite tossed up on impact, eh? Are meteorites sometime radioactive or similar?
It would be quite the problem if there was an illness extraterrestrial in origin.....

If it were some sort of alien bacteria, yeah, we're all fuct, but chances of that are pretty minuscule. There is, however, stinky stuff like sulfur on meteorites, which could make you sick if you breathed in enough.

Mystery solved: the meteorite was not poisonous, but the underground water uncovered by the crater it formed was tainted with naturally occurring arsenic. The hot meteorite caused the water to boil, creating arsenic fumes, which was breathed in by the curious locals, which is what made them sick. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... -peru.html (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/070921-meteor-peru.html)
