9/7/2007 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFPN) -- On the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Air Force fighters assigned to the Continental U.S. NORAD Region will be visible over the New York City area.

Two F-15 Eagles from the 102nd Fighter Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base, Mass., will over fly New York City as part of the continuing Operation Noble Eagle mission.

The F-15s will make low approaches on LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy, Newark and Teterboro airports. The sorties are carefully planned and conducted to ensure public safety while displaying NORAD's rapid response capability.

The air defense deterrence flights are not threat driven, but demonstrate improvements in air security that have taken place since Sept. 11, said Maj. Gen. Hank Morrow, the commander of Continental U.S. NORAD Region, called CONR.

"We've become increasingly visible in our (Operation Noble Eagle) role, due largely to the increased assets we have sitting alert across America today," General Morrow said. "We've more than doubled the amount of fighter aircraft defending the homeland, and that force is representative of a larger, more robust air defense 'system of systems,' including air defense sectors, ground assets, and close coordination with the (Federal Aviation Administration) and other federal agencies, local governments and government officials.

"This visibility is part of our (Operation Noble Eagle) mission responsibilities, and sends the clear message that we are fully dedicated to the continued security of North America and, in that role, will remain unpredictable to potential adversaries. We can be anywhere at anytime," General Morrow said.

CONR, under its parent command NORAD, has conducted air patrols throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle -- the command's response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

you still hear them almost every night as they fly CAP over the city. don't know if the increaed presence on 9-11 is going to help any.

I think you missed the point, this is more to show the public that it is still going on. Looking foward to seeing them at EWR of course.

that i understood bill. but the way i see it, those that want to do hard to this country will still find a way. regardless of how many flyovers the USAF will do.

I agree completely, but the general public will have a warm fuzzy feeling from this.

Maybe the bad guys won't hijack planes again, but with all these Tu-95 Bears flying around (http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,,2163746,00.html) I'm glad CAP is still in place. :)

It's great to show they are still out there, but these flyby's will do nothing but scare people and remind them of the fear they felt and saw and heard 6 years ago.

I am enjoying my temporary status as a gentleman of leisure. http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/183650037-L.gif I was out in the backyard around 11am today when I heard the sounds of aircraft overhead, but definitely not airliner-type sounds. Looked up to see a pair of F-15s in loose formation just out cruising. That's something I haven't seen overhead since 9/11/01 - on that afternoon, I saw a pair of F-16s orbiting overhead in Syosset.

Did anyone see the flybys of the airports?

At 10:50am, two F-15s departed JFK off of rwy 22, and made a big left turn....seemingly going over to where Moose was.

i heard a go-fast depart LGA today (wednesday) around 1100. i was sitting in class looking east and whatever it was departed over our heads (off of 22). the engine sounds were definately military, sounded like an F-18. can anyone confirm?

The pair of F-15's made 2 runs down the Hudson and circled around over Western Long Island and the city before making a low approach to JFK, then to LGA and were supposed to hit EWR before they changed their minds and departed back to FMH.

I Caught them on approach to 22 at LGA yesterday around 11am, They were on UHF so I couldnt hear them , only the tower when he gave them a Left to 070 and switched them to approach.

what were "they?" F-15s or -18s? from my vantage point in class it only sounded like one, though if they were in close formation i can understand why it would sound that way.

They actually came on on the ILS a bit hot , while they were louder than the usual types , but they werent in full blast (low and slow) - noisy as the F18's usually are . Staggered formation. Started the missed approach at about 100ft - definitely F15's though
