LAS 9/4

Since I am off this week I flew to LAS for some R&R. Of course I met up this morning with my friend Dave Budd. Jason Whitebird arrived along with a local newbie named Brandon. We had a nice morning before the sun got too harsh. Also toward the end Shane Stoffregan showed up too. It was a great morning. Traffic was ok, the usual blue overdose of WN but some nice stuff too. N88ZL was in town yesterday and that private 767 and a 747SP were parked and didn't move. Here is three shots I threw a quick edit on.

Nice shots, Nick. I just got back from Vegas and the last day driving past the airport I was a little sad that I didn't do any shooting, though I did do some distant spotting from my hotel...got to see a Janet jet on final.

What are some good spots around LAS?

I just got back from Vegas and the last day driving past the airport I was a little sad that I didn't do any shooting, though I did do some distant spotting from my hotel...got to see a Janet jet on final. What are some good spots around LAS?





Got to shoot at LAS! It's such a great place. Sunset viewing area is the most famous. If you are lucky to catch runway 1 in use the parking garage is awesome. There are so many spots with the light being so good. If it's late you can shoot from LVB for 19 depatures too. You can also shoot from all up and down Sunset. Sometimes they use 25L to get some depatures out early morning. You can get some nice shots down the road from the viewing area.

Janet is the de facto name for a small fleet of Boeing 737 passenger jets operated by defense contractor EG&G. Most people think Janet stands for " just another non existing terminal." The aircraft serve the Nevada Test Site (most notably Area 51) from their terminal at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. The origin of the word "Janet" is obscure and while it is used as a radio callsign it is not known whether the name is an official name, code word, or acronym. The Janet fleet at McCarran includes 7 Boeing 737-200s painted white with a very prominent red trim stripe (the livery of now defunct Western Airlines), and 5 several smaller executive turboprops (2 Beechcraft 1900 and 3 Beechcraft 200C) painted white with less prominent blue trim stripes. The 737s have not been re-engined with modern turbofan engines, hence with their early JT8D low by-pass turbofan engines, they are extremely loud compared to modern airliners. Their tail numbers are registered to "Department of the Air Force", while some earlier members of the fleet were registered to several unexceptional civil aircraft leasing corporations. There is some evidence to suggest that six of the seven 737s were modified from being military Boeing T-43 aircraft. Note - The name Janet could possibly mean 'Just Another Non Existent Terminal', referring to the terminal at Las Vegas' McCarran Airport affectionately called 'Dreamland'.
