There is another catagory 5 storm churning the Gulf. This one developed from nothing to a 5 almost over night. What an amazing feat that is! What is frightining is that these storms will keep developing like so and that means that soon enough one is going to come up the atlantic ocean or hit the gulf coast again. What is your contingency plan if we were to be hit here on Long Island.

M e personally, I am taking a truck from my dads lot, packing it with family and personal stuff of value and headding to the midwest at the whiff that one is going to hit within 150 nautical miles. We are certainly at risk here on Long Island. I am sure if something like that hit here my home would be gone. I live about a quarter mile from the ocean maybe a bit more and the bay is in my yard.

The worst case would be if it hit Staten Island because the winds would cause storm surges on LI.

A case a beer, charged camera batteries and a glow stick...just for fun, no real reason! ;)

Beleize actually it looks like. I will certainly take some Blue Moon with me. I do not know if they have that stuff in Nebraska.

Ryan the chance of a cat 5 hitting Long Island is very small. The waters up here simply aren't warm enough and begin to cool down very quickly come September. A cat 3 I can see hitting us, which in itself would do a huge amount of damage but a cat 5, doubt it.

if we were hit head-on my house and office would both be under water. while the house is 14 ft above sea level, LGA is only 8.

I would say the tower would be above water but most of the stuff below it would suddenly become great mooring material for rafts.

This highly detailed color coded storm surge map shows which areas will be flooded based on storm category.

Even a cat 1 at high tide would put much of lower Manhattan, Coney Island, LGA, and yes, Long Beach, underwater. Interestingly, even though the south shore seems much more flood prone, it would take a category 2 storm to take out JFK, I guess because it's somewhat protected by the Rockaway Peninsula.

Thats scary to look at that diagram. Even though it appears I won't get any flooding, anything could happen.

Only slightly comforting to know that a Cat 4 would take my place out.

The worse case for who?

How does a massive hurricane "hit Staten Island" and not be 100% all over Long Island at the same time?

If the eye hit Staten Island or New Jersey, all the waves would be swept onto Long Island.

I've heard this too...if the eye of a storm were to head straight at New York Harbor and hit Staten Island and lower Manhattan, the storm surge would be worse for everyone. If a storm hit LI dead-on it would be bad, but the water would have some room to dissipate to the east and west, but if it hit the corner of the upside down L-shape formed by Long Island meeting the mainland, the water would have nowhere to go but onto land.
