View Full Version : Labor Day Weekend Spotting?

With Labor day weekend WX looking pretty good so far who's going out? I'd like to get out one of the days this weekend but no sure which as of yet. So far its looking like Monday might be the only day I can get out, if so I'll prob hit LGA since I haven't been there since the winter/spring.

I think I'll be at FRG first in the morning then take a spin over to JFK. I honestly hope they are not on the 22s this weekend. The weeds at the mounds are horribly overgrown.

Might be able to pull off some early mornings at LGA, otherwise I am at the US OPEN the entire weekend.

I will be out all day Saturday and Sunday. :) viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7961 (http://nycaviation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7961)

Unless LGA is on 04 in the morning, I'll stick to JFK since I'd like to avoid the US Open traffic and parking nightmare over by the marina.

It's hard for me to say this far in advance what I'm going to be up to next weekend, but if the weather forecast continues to be as optimistic as it is right now, I'll definitely plan for at least half a day of spotting...

My calendar looks clear for that weekend, and I definitely want to head out to FRG one day to catch some of the warbirds. If anyone else is heading out that way for some spotting, let me know. I might hit JFK either that day or another, depending on how things go.

I'll be at FRG, and maybe JFK.

I have FRG penciled in for one day and I'm open to JFK for another. I second Josh's comments, I'm staying away from LGA because of the US Open traffic...although, I bet Sheltair at LGA might have some intersting visitors between now and the end of the tourney. Ron? Hiss? Matt? Can you shed some light?

Didn't quite think it was an option this weekend however it now looks like there is a possibility I'll be out Saturday or Sunday. Can't do Monday since I have to pencil in some back to school shopping and on Tuesday I leave for Montreal for 4 days.

Well that's why we stand by the soccer pitch and get hit in the head with rogue balls! :)

I might head out to the mounds or Cargo Plaza on Sunday as winds are SSW.

I may need to throw the weed-whacker in the car before I head out

Looks like I'll be out Sat with Mr. Derner and Mr. Molnar. I'm either going to stop at FRG in the morning or LGA if they are on the 4s and the sun is out.

Tom, just trying to clarify the first post.... First to FRG, then, JFK or LGA???

Anyone planning on going out Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday? I have Mon, Tues, and Weds off. Loads into JFK and/or ISP look favorable.

All depends Mario, if LGA is on the 4s in the morning I'll go to LGA and not FRG or FRG first if LGA is using another runway. I might also do JFK first if certain things are in place. Yes I know I'm confusing but what I do all depends on Sat morning.

So far, the forecasted winds (NNE/NE) for Saturday look favorable to the 4s. I might hit JFK in the morning from Bayswater if the forecast is right, and then hit FRG in the afternoon after I lose the light. I'm hoping that the forecast is wrong, though; I'd love to get JFK on the 22s again in the afternoon.

I'm sure I'll be out at various times and places this weekend, between FRG, JFK, LGA, who knows what else. I'll call the usual suspects, and feel free to give me a call as well.

I'll be at JFK on Saturday. If 4's stay in use all day I'll have to hit up my favorite departure spot which is only usable during 4 departures in the evening!

For anyone thinking of hitting LGA this weekend no runway closeurs are planned.

The winds right now are forecast due north at a pretty good clip in the morning, shifting to the west and then southwest after noon. So everyone will probably be on the 4s in the morning. After that, LGA will probably stay on EXP31 for as long as possible and JFK will switch to the 31s, then the 22s.

I'll definitely hit JFK in the afternoon. Whether or not I also go to Planeview in the morning depends on how early I can drag myself out of bed :)

Assuming that 04 is the arrival runway at LGA, I will be at Planeview on Saturday morning, probably around 7am. I hope to see lots of people out there!

I'm planning on being at JFK morning to evening tomorrow and morning only on Sunday. I'm not sure about Monday yet, though.

It's sort of a suicidal spot along Rockaway and not great for a lot of people but it's a good spot nonetheless. It's a tricky angle as well.

Did anyone get their asses out of bed? The AI 777 came in with the most beautiful light hitting it on 31R. Breathtaking.

At JFK, winds favor the 31s but they're landing on the 4s. At LGA, winds favor the 4s but they're landing EXP31. Hmm....

I'm going out this afternoon...if JFK switches to the 31s, I assume I'll see a few of you in the Firestone parking lot. If not, and if LGA is still on EXP31, I might check out the Worlds Fair Marina...the Mets are away this weekend.

I wonder if there's a Zipcar lot near JFK?

I know this is short notice, but if anyone is out or knows someone who is out right now, I strongly suspect that N658JB (The Simpsons) is coming in to JFK from ROC at 12:52 as JetBlue flight 27.

JFK is splitting arrivals between 13L and 22L, with winds favoring 22L...What do we think the chances are of them staying this way? Worth a trip to the Mounds? Or am I going to have to find something else to do this afternoon? :)

One question. If winds are from the south, which runway will be in use at JFK for arrivals and which for departures?

Yep the winds are toward the south for the late afternoon-evening so they will be using 22L. I will be at the mounds from 3-7pm.

They will usualy use 13R for departures, 13L for domestic/some heavy arrivals, and 22L for european arrivals.

Around 1430 LGA started landing on 22 (still departing 13 Flushing Climb) and the AA Retro 738 paid us a welcome visit plus two Songs within an hour of each other.
