An aircraft carrying US military personnel was today forced to make an emergency landing at an Irish airport.

The jet, flying from Maine in Boston to Leipzig in Germany, touched down safely at Shannon Airport after the pilot reported a problem with one of the aircraft’s engines.

Emergency services at Shannon, were on standby as the World Airways MD-11 jet landed shortly before 3.30pm.

The aircraft was carrying 257 troops and crew.

A spokeswoman for Shannon Airport said the emergency service – which included units of the fire brigade from Shannon Town and ambulances from Ennis and Limerick – were not needed.

Engineers are inspecting the aircraft before deciding whether it is safe to continue its journey or if the troops have to spend the night in local hotels.

Amazing that newspaper would make such a geographic mistake. There must not be many Irish in Boston lol...

Shannon is awesome.

I wonder what airline it was. With 257 pax, it was probably World, ATA, or one of the charter airlines that fly a big boy.

Yes, I was right, it's World. It's actually the retro-colors plane.

I enjoyed my 2 hours I've spent in Shannon, it was on our way home from Iraq and was the first beers I had in about 9 months! :D I slept good the rest of the flight home

haha. I've been on many of those trips coming home.

I remember this one time we had a whole bunch of 18-19 year old soldiers that just did 12-18 months in Iraq. Their CO told them no more than 2 beers in Shannon, but most had 5-6 in just the hour and a half on the ground.

So we sat them back down and I noticed them starting to get a little antsy, and I didn't understand why.

We took off and when we went through 10,000ft, the "ding....ding" from the cockpit created a lav stampede! From my view in the very last row (on a 763), I just saw a rush of people headed towards me. I thought the plane was going to tip backwards! Thankfully, people in the front also went to those lavs....keeping the plane within CG. (center of gravity) ;) haha

No offence but I recall there was once a senator from the US who was spreading the news that Holland (the Netherlands) was the capital of Denmark.. sio don't start about 'such geographical errors of a newspaper'...
