On Thursday I left work a little early and headed down to the Kips Bay Theaters on East 31st to see a screening of
"Transformers". After the movie I decided to take the short walk over to the East 34 Street Heliport to see if there was
any action before heading home.
Well let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised. The place was hopping!!
As I was walking down 34 Street two copters were already holding in the "hole" because of a crowded heliport. An
S76 with a female pilot had just departed heading up to Foxwoods Casino. I missed the call sign but I thought I heard
it was one of US Helicopters ships. At the pad Heliflights two dark colored Bell 430s, N430HF and N431HF sat next to
each other at the north end of the facility and S76, N30NY was just lifting off. Copters were arriving from the north and
departing to the south. A US Helicopter S76, N151US arrived next then the two 430s departed one after the other to the
north. Then Twinstar N631CL came in, dropped passengers, refueled and off. But by the Williamsburg Bridge the heliport
controller called them back for another charter. They did a 180 and came back in but then were told the charter was not going to use them, they were sending another copter. "Sorry about that" "No problem" and off they go. Which was good
for N151US. They wanted more room to takeoff because of a full load. It was pretty cool as they lifted off and elevated
straight up over the heliport going above the FDR before nose down and heading out to JFK.
And the pad didnt stay empty for long.
N430AP (Bell 430 out to FOK)
N152TA (Astar, the replacement for Charlie Lima out south)
N200BK (Agusta 109E idled awhile before out north checking out on Hudson north)
N159MT (Twinstar, arrived empty, hot fuel out south)
N119EH (Agusta 119 Koala out to the southeast for track routing to the Hamptons)
N403ST (S76 out to the northeast)
N76FL (S76 out to the Hamptons)
N150US (US Helicopter S76 with British pilot still idling when I left at 7:40)
N409MR (Twinstar to the Hamptons with one passenger)
And it was time for me to hike up to Penn Station (a brisk 25 minute walk).
I havent spotted at 34 Street in years but this trip (6:25 to 7:40) was well worth it. Lots of fun on a nice warm
evening.
Two asides: if you are a fan of nonstop slambang scifi action with guns, wheels and LOTS of aircraft then go check
out Transformers!! 2 hours 20 minutes never went so fast.
And Manhattan has the most beautiful woman in the world. I mean I work in Manhattan everyday but
Thursday night was outstanding (LOL)!!! From the girls jogging by on the boardwalk on the south end
of the heliport distracting my watching to all the ones I saw while heading to Penn Station. Nice.
