ABC 15 News (Phoenix):

Serious Security Questions at Sky Harbor Airport (http://www.abc15.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=568d6b4d-67b7-4116-9098-4c35d8b5ce38#top)

... We've discovered a 4.5 hour time frame each night when virtually anything can be brought into the secure side of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. There's no metal detector, no X-ray machine, and it's apparently not a problem.

Afraid to show her face, one long time Sky Harbor employee talks about the security most people don't see.

Update!

As of just a few minutes ago:

The TSA has reportedly placed the Federal Security Director at Sky Harbor on administrative leave.

The TSA also says it will resume 24-hour screening tonight at all airport security checkpoints.

Resume?!?! Why wasn't this being done in the first place? If a terminal is open, then security should be there as well.

Just explaining the situation. My opinion of the situation may differ.

The way many terminals operate is that when there aren't any departing flights late at night the checkpoints are closed and private security watches the exit lanes. No one is suppose to entering the areas beyond the checkpoints. Employees should be using the operations doors via swipe access.

With only 45,000 officers having them sit and watch a closed checkpoint didn't make sense. The responsibility of gate areas are the airports. Every morning the areas are swept by LEOs and secured again.

EMS hit the nail on the head. That is how EVERY airport does it without getting too into detail. If people are getting through places other than the swipe doors when TSA is closed the private firm is not doing it's job.
