Greetings,

For those of you who are also ship spotters ... here are some images ... taken on a recent visit to Philadelphia ... of our once "glory of the seas" ... the Blue Ribband winner SS United States. She's a sorry sight indeed.

I was surprised to find she still existed. Many years ago I heard she was being preserved for possible conversion to a high-speed troop transport in time of national emergency. That possibility probably doesn't exist any more ... and I believe she was sold to another owner ... for what?

Wow amazing Mike! I've followed her story for some time and the last report before I stopped paying attention was she was going to be converted into a cruise ship for NCL lines but it never took off. She really is in a sad state. I don't think she'll ever sail again but how great would it be if they brought her here to NYC and docked her next to the Intrepid? Perhaps offer something like the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

A bit off topic but I was just in Victoria Canada last weekend. We had some free time and went to the RBC Museum where they had an exhibition on the Titanic with a great deal of items taken up from the sea floor including parts of the hull. Fantastic display to say the least.

Tommy is exactly right. There was some discussion of having her refurbished to be a cruise liner. I've been led to believe this was not impossible or far fetched as it might sound in basic terms - but alot of issues at play apart from simply the cost of fixing her up. I believe the problems are in the details - red tape/regulations type stuff... but I could be wrong.

Its a good question whats going to happen in the future. For now at least we have this...as sad as it is.

There was just a large article about this ship in USAToday last week. Interesting story but her future is in doubt, as NCL was hoping to make her there 4th ship but due to a huge loss are instead going from 3 to 2 ships in their fleet. Article said interior is completely stripped and there is a group dedicated to trying to save/restore her. Mike thanks for posting.

LGA777,

Do you know if this article is anywhere online ... or how else I may be able to access it? Thanks.
