Heard this copter this morning on JFK freq coming west from LI, track routing to Newark, NJ. Curious from the N # and checking it out I see it is registered to the "New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene". A 1989 Bell 206B Jetranger.
Anyone any info on why this dept. has a helicopter and used for...what?

I suspect if you do some digging you will find alot of state and other government agencies have their own aircraft that are used to ferry officials between various agency locations. As to whether it's a cost effective use of public funds, I am not so sure, but all it takes is some bureaucrat appropriating something like this and then it's awfully hard to make them give it up.

That I know but in NYC the NYPD Aviation Unit is pretty much your multi-task operation which includes ferrying about govt officials. Maybe its an
undercover copter. LOL!! Like their unmarked 412EP, N23FH, which is registered to a Montero Inc on 86th Street in Brooklyn!! Hard to be inconspicuous when you have a Nightsun, FLIR and Rescue hoist hooked up to the aircraft. :O)

I don't think N23FH is supposed to be "undercover".

It's the most advanced crime-fighting helicopter in use by any other police department in the country.

I remember reading that the 23 in the N number is for the 23 officers who passed away on 9-11, and that the FH stands for "Fallen Heroes." I think it's a nice way to remember them.

I researched it, and it seems that it's main purpose now is for counterterrorism missions.

They probably want to look like a coporate helicopter to blend in (without identifiable markings, like a registration, for easy identification), and they probably have it registered in Brooklyn maybe to confuse a would-be terrorist who looks up the N Number?
