TETERBORO, N.J. - Federal authorities are investigating how two corporate planes preparing to take off missed colliding by 50 feet at Teterboro Airport.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, told The Star-Ledger of Newark the pilot of one of the planes slammed on the brakes, blowing two tires.
None of the three people aboard the planes was injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration was reviewing Sunday's incident as a possible mistake by an air traffic controller.
In a preliminary report, the National Transportation Safety Board said the controller cleared an Avantair Piaggio 180 jet-powered turbo-prop for takeoff on Runway 24 while a Ciruss SR22 prop craft received permission to depart within a minute later.
The Avantair pilot braked as the Cirrus cleared the intersection 50 feet ahead and the Cirrus completed its takeoff.
