I can tell you've been with an airline too long. "Ladies and Gentlemen the reason for the delay is ATC"

There were big delays / holding and some diverting too. How's this for PHX-JFK via Kennebunk, Maine

Yep, I got a call about that one. It appears that somehow a rumor got out that there was a disabled airplane at JFK.

Back in 1985 while working at Northeastern I once flew nonstop FLL-ISP on a 727-200, via MSY and CVG, due to severe thunderstorms throughout the country. While waiting in the departure line at FLL we where abeam the DL gates and only one aircraft was their. an L-1011 which I watched the ramp loading containers, as we sat right behind in line. Sadly around 3 hours later that same aircraft would crash on short final at DFW, a victim of wind sheer, associated with the thunderstorms.

A few winters back, I was on an awful CO flight from EWR to IAH that had a similar dogleg. There was a nasty cold front on a curved line from about Rochester to near Atlanta, and there wasn't much of anything flying through it. We went south along the east coast and then turned west just south of the GA/SC border and meandered towards Houston. I'm not sure we ever climbed above FL250, which I could see because we were in a 777 that had a moving map. I'd love to know how much extra fuel we burned on that trip.

(I believe that was the same trip when, on the way back from DEN to EWR, we got a 120 mph tailwind for most of the flight and made the flight in just over two and a half hours.)
