Greetings,
Does anyone else here collect/photograph airliner tail logos? I find them fascinating and colorful examples of graphic design and national identity.
In the field I try to zoom in on only the tail itself. Or I post-edit my digital images on the computer at home and crop out everything else.
Recently I acquired a dandy pocket 108-page paperback from amazon.com entitled, “Airline Tail Colours” by B I Hengi … yes it’s from the UK … for $14.95. It’s sub-titled: “590 colour illustrations to aid in the quick recognition of airlines.”
It also includes separate tables for: - aircraft type abbreviations (IATA-codings); plus country codes/abbreviations.
Each sharp (1-3/8 x 1-1/2-inch) color thumbnail entry has below it: airline name … 3-letter code … radio call-sign prefix … international aircraft registration prefix … ITU country code … and IATA aircraft code.
The book was copyrighted in 2005 so some of the newer logos may be absent. Still … the overwhelming number of logos are still current and relevant.
A lot of these logos have probably never been seen in the western hemisphere … but if any of you travel overseas … who knows what you’ll see?
So … if any of you out there are also into “tail colours” …. I’d welcome hearing from you. Perhaps we might compare notes … experiences … tips … et al. Thanks.
