Very cool. At first I thought this would be considered for use by a passenger airline, but I am guessing its more for cargo.

Boeing claims it is closer than ever to launching the long-awaited BC-17 commercial derivative of its C-17 strategic transport, but says the growing gap in guaranteed production beyond delivery of the final contracted aircraft in 2009 makes this, and any further potential study derivatives, increasingly expensive to develop.

"We have several customers with money that have given us requests for proposals," says C-17 vice president and programme manager Dave Bowman, who adds: "I've never received RFPs before."

boeing is seriously pushing this now because the backlog of orders from the USAF, RAF, and RAAF is growing shorter. with no other a/c in production at LGB, it leaves serious doubt about the future of the facility.

Why not a BC-5 also?

BC-5? What would that be a variant of?

The C-5 Galaxy. :D

Or would it be the LC-5?

The market for them would be small, but there is no existing suitable replacement for the AN-124/224. I know the BC-17 will target the same market, but the C-5 is a whole lot bigger.

I believe the AN-124s are still in production.

It would be interesting to see a commercial C-5 though.

I would love to see commercial C-17's at JFK. It would not be allowed at LGA even with the performance specs. One was on final once to LGA for 22 and LGA tower refused clearnce and diverted them to JFK once.

i forget who it was for, but a C-17 did land at JFK once in the not-so-distant past. i think Ron might even have a picture of it.

It was about two months ago when the A-380 was here. There were a few other landings previous to that at JFK though.

C-17s are a not-infrequent visitor to JFK. Usually associated with a visit by a high goverment official, to carry limos and other support/security gear.

This one had an escort when she arrived on 22R the day before the A380 visit. :D

Nice pic Moose. It lookslike shes trying to "run out" of rudder there. Pretty hard deflection by the looks.
