Hello,

Went out to Howard Beach on Monday and caught some departures. It was a beautiful day. These shots are the best I came away with. My favorite is the JAL 747. All of the shots were taken at Frank M. Charles Park. Later.

Belluciman,

Thank you. I had some other shots of Atlas and JAL Cargo that did not really come out. I was experimenting with my camera and was glad those shots came out. Take care!

nice shots. nice to see some four-holers, even if they're the P340-600.

Brontis 5,

I was in the same neighborhood that day. Looking over from Cross Bay Boulevard (to Frank M Charles Park) I noticed how most departures veered to the left (south) before reaching the park. This made them backlit by the sun so I walked over the bridge to the small parking field at the other side and got a f-e-w shots with better lighting. Even there some departures were only belly shots.

When I was there ... between 1245 and 1330 ... departure traffic was quite low. Did it get better later on? Now I just have to prefect how to upload my shots to this forum.

I'm also wondering if decent shots could be had of JFK 31L departures as seen from Rockaway Beach ... at least Broad Channel. Anyone ever try this?

Thats crazy. I caught the same planes when I was at FRA. Although not the same registrations I got the Cathay, the Olympic, and I believe the Tradwinds?

Further to mine above ...

What I was referring to ... and probably didn't make clear enough ... were those 31L departures that veered seaward and passed directly over the Rockaways ... albeit at higher altitude. A 300mm tele could pull in some good images ... depending on sun angle. Of course that wouldn't work for the flights that didn't veer to the left and continued straight out while climbing to cruising altitude.

Question to all: - can takeoff patterns ... say on JFK 31L ... determine a flight's probable destination? Foreign airlines might be easier to surmise especially if crossing the Atlantic ... but domestic flights could go anywhere from north through west to south. Yes? What about "over the pole" flights to Asia, etc? Thanks.

Departure path 99.9% of the time will not determine path of trip. Actually if you look on Airliners.net the vast majority and many of our personal favorite shots are Howard Beach on the bay there. The banking shot is the best way to do for JFK if you ask me.
