Bill concerning airplane noise advances in US Senate
05/16/07

WASHINGTON - Measures aimed at reducing airplane noise and improving customer service passed a Senate committee today, taking a step closer toward possibly becoming law.

Introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., the measures were part of a bill extending the life of the Federal Aviation Administration. The Senate Commerce Committee approved the legislation today.

One measure would require the government to phase out noisy and fuel-guzzling planes, which the New Jersey Democrat’s office says are a big problem at Teterboro and Morristown airports.

Another would require the federal Transportation Department to investigate, not just record, problems such as overbooked flights, cancellations and the arbitrary elimination of frequent flier miles.
