My job is taking me to NYC next week and I'll be there 48 hours, so I'll have the whole 16Th and the morning of the 17Th available for some photography.

Anyone willing to meet or able to give me some pointers about places to go?

Thank you.

Hi Javier,
Good time to visit NYC--weather is warm but not too warm and the sunlight is plentiful.
See: http://nycaviation.com/jfkspotting for JFK spotting locations and http://nycaviation.com/lgaspotting for LGA.

Weather and runways permitting, I'll probably be out Wednesday afternoon/evening and possibly all day Thursday.

Feel free to PM me if you want to meet up.

Hola Javi!

I really wish I could come out and spot with you but unfortunately it is during the week and I have classes. :(

If you don't mind me saying I am a big fan of your work!

Enjoy JFK!

Thank you very much for your replies.

From the info provided IMHO the most interesting spots at JFK are Howard Beach and Bayswater Park. The question is: Is there any reasonable way to get there by public transportation? (I'll be staying at Manhattan, near Times Square, and I will not have a car)

Thanks!

To get to Howard Beach, take the A to Rockaway Blvd. and then transfer to the Q53 bus. (The Q21 also goes there, but just takes longer.) The bus stops before the bridge and you would then have to walk to the actual spot (allow 10 minutes). The bus may actually stop right at the parking lot used for HoBe (I recall seeing a bus stop sign there, but I'm not sure if the drop-off location is active). You can ask the bus driver to be sure. Alternatively, you could get a cab from the Rockaway Blvd. or JFK/Howard Beach station (I think you would have more luck getting a cab at Rockaway Blvd. than JFK/Howard Beach).

For Bayswater, take a Mott Avenue/JFK bound A (not a Lefferts Blvd. A) to the last stop, Far Rockaway/Mott Avenue. Exit the station--there's only one exit--turn left and then walk along Mott Avenue (stay to the right when you get to the fork) all the way to the end. The walk takes about 20 minutes. There is a bus, Q22A that goes near Bayswater, but it only runs from 10AM-2PM every 20 minutes. You could also take a cab from Mott Avenue, which should only take 5 minutes. I would suggest to walk or take a cab.

To get from HoBe to any of the other spots is pretty difficult. You could either walk back up the bridge to Cross Bay Blvd. and take the Q53 bus back to the A train Rockaway Blvd. stop, take the Q53 further down Cross Bay Blvd. to E 6 Rd. and then walk three blocks to the Broad Channel A stop (that will continue to Mott Avenue), or somehow get a taxi from HoBe (I think this would be unlikely unless you the number of some local cab companies and then call and ask them to pick you up).

From the Mott Avenue A stop, you can take the Q113 bus to Firestone, Costco, and the Mounds. (To get to the Q113 bus stop from Mott Avenue, exit the station--again, only one exit--and walk left one block and then cross the street. The stop is in the middle of the block.) From Firestone/Costco, you can take the Q113 bus to the Mounds and vice-versa.

Definitely use these maps:
MTA subway: http://mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
MTA Queens bus: http://mta.info/nyct/maps/busqns.pdf

If you plan on spending most of the day at JFK, consider getting the daily unlimited MetroCard ($7) that allows as many rides as you want from midnight to midnight. If there are runway switches, this could save you a few bucks.

Of course, if anyone else is out, they could offer to give you a ride.

Let me know if you have any questions.
