(CBS) NEW YORK CBS 2 has learned that Pope Benedict XVI is planning to visit New York City for a trip to the United Nations headquarters.
No word on when yet. What will he arrive on, Alitalia I guess?

I'd take a Gulf Air A330-200 or A340-300! :)

Ah Shepard One is coming. TWA was for many years the carrier of the Vatican. TWA used everything from the 747, 767, 727, and L1011 to shuttle the pope to and from the U.S and throughtout Europe.

Guess he won't be flying TWA this time :(

Quick story about the first time that Pope John Paul II did fly TWA to the US, back in the late 1970s. When TWA went to their second generation scheme, with the twin stripes, and red block tail, the large block letters "TRANS WORLD" on the foward fuselage were white outlined in red against the white fuselage, and not extremely visable. To help it show up better on TV, they filled in the letters, and liked it so much, they adopted it as the standard.

Jon Proctor has a shot of the outlined-letter version on JP.net:

And another of Jon's with the solid letters:

In the later JP2 days, the practice was to fly Alitalia in, and then the local airline out (e.g. on his Israel trip in March 2000, he flew to Jordan on Alitalia, from Jordan to Israel on Royal Jordanian, and back to Rome on El Al [744 4X-ELD, the 'Jerusalem.'] While he was in-country, he was ferried around on an IDF helicopter, a UH-60, I believe). I remember watching Chopper 4 showing a tracking shot Shepard One, an AZ 763, all the way to touchdown in Newark sometime in the mid-90s.

i know that John Paul II would usually fly to a country on Alitalia and then return on a LO flight if he could. i've got pix from WAW when he flew back to the vatican on an LO 737. that was the same year as our 75th aniversary and the airplane has a special scheme for that.

Funny how things like that work out. Thanks for sharing--I didn't know about that.

When the Pope had a quick meeting with Clinton at EWR, the pontiff came in on an Alitalia MC-11. Within the US he flew on TWA.

Don't know what will happen this time, but I guess we know TWA won't be involved.

He flys the national carrier of the nation he departs. He went to MEX in 99 on an Alitalia MD-11 and returned on a MX 752.
