View Full Version : Major storm to impact Northeast...

The storm system that brought over a foot to many of the Western States, and Severe Thunderstorms to the Central and Southern States (to include a tornado in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area) is set to bear down on New England, as a Classic spring Nor'Easter.
Although NYC will probably see rain for most of the event (2-3 inches, with locally 4 inches) areas further West could see significant snowfall. Winds, and coastal flooding will be the main impact with the storm.
The central pressure of the storm is forecasted to be between 980mb and 990mb, equivalent to that of a strong tropical cyclone.
As with most storms, track is going to be the key to everything. A more inland track, even by 50 miles, and the storm doesn't turn out as impressive as thought, although remains a huge rain producer. People will always give the weather guys a hard time about busted forecasts, but it is simply amazing that a storm thousands of miles in length and width, with the power of millions of nuclear bombs, can be predicted days out in a fairly accurate manner.
This storm has been great to watch develop. After crossing the Rockies today, it just blew up, bringing a line of Severe weather along the associated Cold Front, stretching from the Central U.S. all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. There was actually a ton of potential for tornadic activity associated with this storm, which never really materialized (just a few tornadoes), but nevertherless, there have been many hail and high wind reports.
Without getting into too many meteorological terms, this is due in large part to the baroclinicity in the mid-lattitudes in the springtime (namely the month of April). This is generally when storms have the greatest potential for explosive growth, such as seen with this one.

Lots of cool info, but you didn't tell us when this would be happening. Apparently sometime this Spring. :-p

Last night because of this same weather system DFW TWR closed for a short period of time as they sent the crew to the basement. A tornado passed very close to DFW.

Judging by the soreness in my ankle which I sprained badly about 9 years ago which doubles as a barometer and Doppler radar, I forecast a reeeeeally bad storm. :)

So far this storm seems to have been over hyped. The rain has been steady but nothing I would call the worst storm in over 20 years. They were forecasting 40knot winds, I havn't seen them over 13 knots yet.

Well, it's certainly affecting traffic patterns at the three airports. At JFK, they're using ILS 13L for landings and LGA is ILS 13. When was the last time we've seen this happen?

The winds are definitely picking up here. They're now saying the peak winds will be between 3 and 9pm.

It is DME to 13 but it was going on last night as well while I was there picking the GF up from work and such. Pretty rare.

Had a wedding today in Norwood, NJ. Wife doesn't want to chance it. Getting reports on heavy ponding on every roadway.
Be safe.

Not like the old says working a bus. We both would have been in the middle of the mess.
Stay safe and dry.

I flew in and out of JFK yesterday in the mess. Coming home, we landed on ILS 13L, which is not common for a straight-in approach. Weaving in and out of serious storm cells botched around the city, fighting hard rain, high winds and a 200-foot ceiling, it was amazingly smooth. Big thanks to my talented and professional crew!

Phil --
Did that approach take you straight over lower Manhattan?

I'm not sure if I went over Lower Manhattan, as I couldn't see down, but after looking at my path on FlightAware after I got home, too, I definitely went over Manhattan perpendicularly minutes before landing.

Thats great. We used to see that on rare occasions over the years in good weather - but then "rare" became "never". I used to love watching that configuration from lower manhattan. I can remember seeing a Pan Am 747 perpendicular and beneath the LGA approach over Brooklyn.

that approach to JFK is really rare, but only in bad wx. i'm still trying to figure out what approach brings traffic low over my hosue in northern brooklyn. it's definately no LGA traffic...

Over the summer I saw Wunala Dreaming flying over the city when I was down by 42nd street. I imagine that is the approach you are talking about?

Hi Gordon.
For a spotter that rarely flies or has much interest in ATC, I am not good at estimating/translating the altitude. I've certainly seen JFK traffic and EWR traffic over Manhattan (or "close") before, but the configuration I was referring to has the JFK traffic significantly "low". Easily reading titles, and such..again, flying *beneath* and perpedicular to the LGA approach over Brooklyn. Actually if that approach was ever used in good weather now, I can imagine it scaring some folks with the heavies so low in post 911 times.

Hey Tom,
Wunala was flying relatively high and I'm sure it was easier to tell what it was due to her red coloring all over!
I'm assuming by low you mean close to the altitude that the LGA traffic usually flies over the city?

Yes, but actually *lower* than the LGA traffic over the city. Generally the LGA traffic over Manhattan is going (roughly) North or South (sometimes turning), but the JFK traffic I am referring to would be going roughly West to East and flying BENEATH the same LGA traffic. Thats what made it so special. Now, this was a lot of years ago, and quite rare (except in very lousy weather) but it was generally just south of Houston Street (so therefor Lower Manhattan) but there were even rarer occasions it was mid town.
