Indeed I should have... You should have heard me when Josh notified me of the diversions just as I was leaving JFK, my heart literally skipped a beat when I heard Continental 777-200!

I've never had the 'pleasure' of the CO diversion to SWF, but especially with regard to the international longhaul flights, can anyone tell me how long they are typically stuck there until they can go on to EWR? Are the passengers ever allowed off, even into some holding pen area? I'd be pretty upset after a 7 hour CO flight from Europe to have to sit in the aircraft at SWF for several more hours, especially knowing that BA, AF, LH etc. do not seem to have to do this!

They are usually on the ground for about 30-60 mins to take on addl fuel. The reason that this happens is because of the limitations of the 757. BA/AF/LH use 777 and A340s which have the range and allow holding. Since prior to the open skies agreement which was recently agreed to CO doesn't have the luxury of flying into places like LHR but instead have to settle for LGW. The flight that diverts to SWF is usually 121 because it is very close to the fuel burn and minimums even with winglets. A larger a/c could make the trip such as a 767 or 777 but the demand is not there for that type of a/c which is why CO is the only airline that flies from Ireland to EWR.

International passengers are not allowed to deplane as there are no customs for commercial passengers at the airport. Most domestic flights have the passengers deplane and are bussed down to the city. The diversions generally all park around the terminal area but never at the terminal only on the ramp area.

Last August I witnessed an SAS A330-300 which diverted from CPH which was on the ground at SWF for a total of 9 hours. The flight diverted and then the crew clocked out and a new crew had to be bussed up from EWR to fly the aircraft down to EWR. What a mess!

The only foreign heavy carrier that I have seen divert to SWF this year was an Air France A330-200 from EWR (AF18).

There was some nasty weather at JFK when I landed today around 1:45pm. Our captain announced at some point during the flight that there was a high chance we would need to divert to an alternate airport and of course wishful thinking lead me to hope for SWF although later when I deplaned my ERJ-145 in the pouring rain on the tarmac at Terminal 2 I asked my pilot and he informed me it would have been PVD.

When do most of these diversions occur? What time of day?

Summertime diversions can, of course, happen at any time, but the two most common reasons are fog and thunderstorms. With the typical weather in the Northeast, fog tends to develop in the hours just surrounding sunrise (air temp at the lowest, approaching the dewpoint), and thunderstorms flare up in the late afternoon when all of the energy stored in the form of heat and humidity needs to go somewhere. Divvos due fog happened this morning at JFK when LAN went to IAD, SA and TG went to Newark, a DL 772 went to Boston, an AA 762 went to Buffalo, and lots of JetsBlue went to BDL and ACY.

Yes, very rarely though. Usually Air Transport Int'l bring them in. Remember horse charters are rare at SWF. They only fly them in is they have 20 or over. In this case, they have 65 on FDX. Most horses go through JFK, and truck down. Not just horses but all kinds of live stock too. I saw they un loading penguins from arctic before.

Royal Air Maroc 757-200


Hi, based on your previous experience, how many more of the UN visitors will end up in SWF? Will, for example, the Iranian SP pay a visit? Wondering if it's worth another visit in the next few days.

I've been lead to the conclusion that by weeks end there will be have been 15 or 16 aircraft parked at Stewart. The Iran 747SP won't be paying a visit however.

I got a partial shot of AF1, and some good shots of A6-XRJ, 0207, the Twinjet, Miami Air, and Kazakstan.

I tried to shoot the Cameroon 767, Congo 727, and DC-8, but I was told that I couldn't for security reasons and something about the state police :(

I was really disappointed about AF1, since that was the reason I took the trip to SWF. They have it parked surrounded by C-5's along a hanger at the ANG base.

Were you at the airport when AF1 departed? I heard 28000 showed up this morning as a decoy before 29000 took off for JFK - it would have been cool to see them both at the same time.

I was actually at school when AF1 departed, luckily I had a free period at the time and was outside hanging on a quad and saw her fly over around 1:00pm. I actually interested some of my friends when I started jumping up and down yelling that it was AF1!

Gordon, the Omni Air bizjet fleet uses fixed flight numbers for each of their jets and I'd be very surprised if dispatch would have been so careless as to mistake a Learjet with a 757. You probably saw one of the unmarked Air Force C-32s fly over. That would seem like a very reasonable possibility, considering Cheney was around. I used to see them fly over my school on approach to Andrews pretty frequently. Hope this helps! :D

I've seen them flying around before on departure and arrival to SWF and have always wondered who they flew for. I had assumed prison flights.
