Today at School I noticed some very strange flight patterns over my school. Traffic for either LGA, JFK, or EWR were circling over my school very close to each other. I also noticed that the HPN traffic was flying extremely low over my school as well as the SWF traffic.

Does this have to do with the new flight patterns?

The new patterns haven't been implemented yet, so probably a problem at the one of the airports or weather.

Around 4pm, from my vantage point, it seems like LGA-bound traffic was flying northbound over Manhattan around 3000 ft. as opposed to up the Hudson on the river visual as is typical. No idea why though.

At that point , inside 20mi from the field aircraft are being vectored by approach. I have seen them occasionally overfly midtown if they're land 22/depart 13 with a right turn into 22. If it's land 22 / depart 31 then they'll be vectored east of the field at 4000ft for a left turn in to 22

when traffic flies north over the city they're on the LDA approach to 22. other than that, as was said before me, traffic is vectored around to adjust for inconsitencies and bottlenecks.

one other thing, this is new york... define normal.

They were probably on VFR because it was a clear day.
