From Rockaway blvd. You had to see the people. Once in a lifetime. As much as I love the 787 I don't think it will get this reaction. People were just stopping in the street. Great day.

Damn guys she looks awesome in your shots!

I got into the hotel here in St.Lucia around 12:30 after suffering through a horrible and very bumpy/wet/terrifying ferry ride from Martinique and was delighted to see footage of her landing at LAX on Fox5. I wish it was JFK but I'll keep an eye out tonight because it looks like Fox5 was there!

It was a great day - the weather was just about perfect, the photo opportunities were excellent, and we got to witness a little bit of history. This isn't about Airbus vs. Boeing, or any of the other hundred arguments surrounding this jet. There aren't too many "firsts" left in aviation, and we saw one today.

Great shots guys. Just for clarification, only the inbound thrust reversers deployed, right?

Here are a few pics. At first, I had no real desire to go. But I thank Tom for encouraging me.

I was great to see friends again. It's been a while. As the wx gets warmer, I hope to bring the next generation of spotters around :)

I was there to witness a moment.
I went there hoping to capture some of the essence of what may have met Concorde on its first flight to NY. The commotion, the media, the fanfare, (though I feel this was muted compared to the 70's.)

Can some of you identify yourselves here? This was the media group I saw.

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38media.jpg

Sweeping the runway just before the landing.

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38sweep.jpg

sinking down... Gosh, can you imagine what it must have been like for its Concorde granddaddy ;) Cars on Rockaway blvd, Woodmere, Cross Bay Blvd? Everyone hoping for a particular runway?

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38far.jpg

The first touchdown in America. History. Wow.

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38side.jpg

Slowing down on only 2 reversed with a full load of pax?

http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38rearportside.jpg

And some of the fanfare on the ramp following the plane.
http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38cars.jpg

coming up to the gate area.
http://www.nycaviation.com/hosting/38close3-4rear.jpg

I saw the gates extend to the plane but hope someone else has shots of it. The top gate extending up to the upper deck was so far up in the air, it was amazing!

Nice shot everyone. Glad everyone had a good day.

Given my options, for my part I was concerned about a change in runways, and being out of position.

At the last minute I decided on Bayswater because I did not like the light otherwise, and because I figured I would be able to document the day on either 22L or 31L.

I don't have a car so I couldn't get out to see the landing. She probably arrived on 22L. Was there a crowd on Rockaway Blvd? I waited with hundreds of others at Terminal One by McDonald's. We saw her taxy in, then park. A teacher even brought her entire class to see history. I thought that only the press would be allowed into the terminal, so I left my camera home. She parked for well over an hour then left for a hangar. It was very impressive to see. I'll try to return to JFK on Wednesday when she does a demo flight in the morning.

Interesting! After looking at their website (I know, Google is my friend) I now know more about Kingfisher then I ever imagined. Although geography in that part of the world isn't my strongest field, it looks like they fly primarily domestic Indian flights, and started operations in May 2005. I assume they are looking at the A380 for high-density, short-haul operations.

I did enjoy the "Chairman's Address":

Welcome aboard Kingfisher Airlines!

I am often referred to as the ‘King of Good Times’ and I truly believe that you should share this experience with me.
...
Aboard every Kingfisher Funliner you will meet a crew that I have hand-picked myself. I have also personally approved their rigorous training programme. Quite apart from this, I have devoted a lot of personal time and energy in ensuring that Kingfisher Airlines is truly world-class in every sense.
...
I have tried very hard to build an airline that meets your expectations. However, if I have missed something or fall short of your expectations, please feel free to mail me directly at [email protected].

Should be interesting...

Yes, well everyone chimed in already, Kingfisher is an airline serving India with 320's and ATRs. Then all of a sudden, they leapt into megalarge planes....

Kingfisher is also an Indian beer, I wonder if they are related?

I was just about to post the same thing, so I looked it up. United Breweries Group, whose main brand is Kingfisher Beer, does indeed own Kingfisher Airlines, which they launched just two years ago. UB is the largest brewery in India and the second largest in the world behind Anheuser Busch. They seem to be building quite a brand, with one in three beers sold in India being Kingfishers, and Kingfisher Airlines being the first in India to offer IFE. The Kingfisher being a type of bird certainly lends itself to a name for an airline...not sure Budweiser Air would be so successful.

Re Tahiti Nui, he was also at the T4 hardstand on Sunday night, is their some tech issue or is that a normal parking place for them?

Re Kingfisher, it's pretty good beer, many Indian restaurants in the NYC area have it on the menu and I order it on occasion, not just to support aviation in India but because the taste goes quite nicely with curries and such.

I like that shot, Tamon, that's a nice catch with all the spotters out front. It was nice to meet you Monday, even if I did desert the group at North Woodmere. Hope to see you again if you make it back to NY.

We were at the PA press event in the food court before the Lufthansa one began. Where were you?

I was in front of that...restaurant/takeout place in the middle of the food court...If you were facing the podium as the people were speaking, I was to the left.

Btw, did anybody else notice the Aeroflot 767 at T1 at that time...It was departing to Washington...Anyone why that was?

Aeroflot has a morning flight that flies SVO-IAD-JFK-IAD-SVO.

Hi everyone, Greetings from a newbie spotter from Florida. A huge thanks to Phil for giving me leads on figuring out a spotting site. It was interesting because I was in NY without a car, relying on the metro and the bus, so the night before I had planned contingency routes in case the airport switched runway on me. Initially the runway arrival was 31L and while I was on Q60 trying to get to Costco, it changed to 22L. So I got off on Farmer Blvd and walked several blocks on 147 Ave, took the Q113 to 230 Ave and went to the soccer mound.

The soccer mound is now one of my favorite spotting place. Next time I go to NYC again I will definitely visit that spot. Probably at different time of the day though...as unfortunately the sun was shining against the A380...on the wrong side.

I apologize for the quality of the image but I do not have a DSLR...and I am fairly new to photography (started planespotting in November of 2006 when I purchased my first camera, Panasonic FZ50).

Thanks again Phil...you've definitely given the newbie spotter an opportunity of a lifetime. :D

Welcome to NYCA. You got some nice shots, and you found the world-famous Mounds! You are right, that spot is really much better in the afternoon, it is backlit earlier in the day. Hope to see you around NY soon, and looking forward to some shots from down in Florida.

Just my little contribution to the photgraphic history of that day. I was more intrested in watching than hammering her with my camera. Besides I could not park my red car whenre it needed to be to go get good shots. As you can tell I was pretty excited. So much that it is missing it's tail in every picture.

Did this Fred Miller go to Hofstra and spot at JFK back in the '80's on the Worldport rooftop? I ask because he looks familiar.

Nice shot Raj! Love that angle on the A380. Wow! I don't think I have ever seen that many people at Bays, only recognize a few people, who was there?

Great shots G-BOAD.
I'm glad you shot there. By the time I got there to the overpass there was some really nice kind and gracious Man in Blue posted at the top on the overpass and got really pissed at me and started at me when I tried to take shots and ran me off (YOU have got to be kidding me!...What the hell are your doing!....Don't you see me parked here!........Get the hell outtah here! Not to mention a million people had just been there- He just unloading on me because of them.

By the time I got to the road below he had gone down there too and kicked everyone from there too.

Bill S.
G-BOADs pushback shot is the angle I was obsessed with getting and that is what I was down the rest of the day cause I missed it. Thats the ones I was telling you I wanted.

No Hofstra but I did spend a fair ammount of time on rooftop parking as my father worked for PAA for 17 years at JFK. -Derf
