So my girlfriend got a Canon XTi for Christmas, and I asked to borrow it this weekend.

I live a lot closer to Lehigh Valley (KABE) than EWR LGA or JFK, so I drove out yesterday morning to catch the DHL 727 leaving to Manchester, VT. Just as my luck would have it, as soon as I pulled into the airport entrance I hear the distinctive roar of the JT3-D7 engines roar up. D'oh! I saw the bright yellow mass of machinery loom into the growing overcast sky with smoke pouring out of the rear. Still an incredibly awesome sight even without a camera.

So I figured I'd still make the most of my trip out. I drove around to the FBO and asked if it would be okay to take pictures. I've been driven out of EWR before, so I always figure when on airport grounds or non-public property, it's best to ask. The lady at the desk was very nice and even said she would go see if one of the pilots would escort me on to the ramp so I could get some nice close ups. I insisted it wasn't necessary, but she went anyway. There were two guys about to ferry a Citation II to Teterboro (KTEB), and they said it would be okay to shadow them while they were doing their preflight. I was estatic right now. The lighting was great and I couldn't ask for a better situation. So I made the most of it.

After I had my fun, I went back to the other side of the fence. I didn't want to overstay my welcome.

I went back in through the hangar. This beauty was too much to pass up. I think the guy said that this is the last Sabreliner built? I need to check on that.

The kit 18-55mm lens isn't that good for this sort of stuff. I should have borrowed a 300mm. :P Plus it was clouding up a lot.

Those are the best from that day. Hopefully I can get back out there with a more suitable lens and sunnier weather soon. I'm very close to landing a summer job there, so here's hoping. :)

I love the way the sunlight was pouring out of the clouds, and the backround in the fourth shot looks almost like a cartoon.

Yeah, I think I overdid it on the contrast. :)
