It happened the second week of the war in 2003. The Pentagon cleared the pilots of any wrongdoing, but the Brits want to question them.

They tried to clear the targets as friend or foe several times and it sounds like the controller (AWACs probably) designated them as foe.

My sympathies to the soldiers killed and injured and the pilots.

Very sad. I agree with EMS. The pilots kept stating that they had orange tops, and seemed to be questioning the orders that they were foe. FUBAR.

Very sad listening to that. :( Reminds me of the Tarnak Farm incident where 4 Canadians were killed, and 8 injured almost 5 years ago now: http://archives.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asia ... an.canada/ (http://archives.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/central/04/18/afghanistan.canada/)

More in-depth at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarnak_Farm_incident

And they even wrote a book about it: http://www.amazon.com/Friendly-Fire-Can ... 0470836865 (http://www.amazon.com/Friendly-Fire-Canadian-Soldiers-Afghanistan/dp/0470836865)
