UPS Places Order for 27 Boeing Planes

UPS Inc. (UPS) said Monday it ordered 27 Boeing 767-300ER aircraft for delivery between 2009 and 2012.

UPS said the Boeing order was not related to its review of its order for 10 Airbus A380 freighters.

The Boeing (BA) 767-300ER has a maximum payload of 132,200 pounds and a range of 3,000 nautical miles.

The order is worth about $3.86 billion to $4.19 billion at list prices, though discounts are commonly negotiated.

Suprised they didn't opt for the 787 or 777. Oh well.

I think most of us can expect UPS to cancel their A380 order.

There is no 787 cargo airplane on the horizon, & if there was, UPS would not be able to get slots for quite some time.

Now, the 767 is an airplane that UPS can get slots very easily and I am sure that UPS was able to negotiate a nice price. Also, the same crews can fly the 757/767.

Good point, I just figured they would opt for a more fuel efficient plane. I'm sure they will get a nice price because once the 787 line comes out Boeing is closing down the 767 line, aren't they?

Fuel efficiency is a low priority for freight carriers, as exemplified by all the 747 classics, DC-10s, and DC-8s still lugging cargo around. In the long term I think freight companies will demand more efficient mid-range cargo jets, like a 787F, but for now I suppose the 767 is the best for what UPS needs it for. A brown 777 would be hot though.

Don't forget that Boeing is bidding for the US Air Force tanker 767 tanker program, you are looking at over 100 airframes.
