View Full Version : Spotting Saturday 1/06 or Sunday 1/07?

So far, the weather looks great ("Partly cloudy, with a high near 59"), and I can finally drive into NY again (the NY inspection on my girlfriend's car had expired), and I was wondering if anybody else was planning on being out on Saturday. Assuming nothing else comes up, I'm probably going to split the weekend spotting and railfanning, and I'd like to get back out to JFK again (unless everyone else is heading to LGA!).

Well, the weather for early Saturday doesn't look as good any more; it now seems like early fog, with a chance of rain until noon. Afternoon should be clear, though, and the weather for Sunday looks great (though slightly colder).

I might try to get out to JFK or LGA (still not sure which) on Saturday afternoon, if it's clear enough. If anyone's interested in meeting up, let me know and I can give you my cell phone number.

Sat is looking better and better for spotting. Calling for sun in the afternoon and as we know 70 degress! I'm thinking of hitting up LGA if 31 is in use, 31 is great in the winter, sun is top notch. If not I'll prob do JFK. I'll see how Sat shapes up.

Well I am thinking I might lay out 70 is good enough for me for that but if not I am sure me and Idle will be around so I will stay in touch Tommy

I'm with Ryan on this one. 70 is some good tan weather, or get myself a tee off time. I will also be in touch as I would like to do some spotting with you Tom, it's been a while.

ATTENTION!!!

The sun is GREAT out today, and both airports are using the 31s.

At JFK, Habitat for Humanity 763 and a Delta 772 are sitting at gates... presumably departing soon.

Anyone who gets a clean shot of EITHER of those two planes today from Howard Beach (departure) and posts it in this thread will get a free NYCA t-shirt mailed to them. First one to post it wins.

If there's a loophole I forgot that you use to win, I'll beat you.

ALSO, Trump is departing at LGA at 10am. He might be late as usual, which should give anyone that wants to get out there a little bit more time. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VPBDJ

I might be out today. Where is everyone going? LGA or JFK? Also is it safe to go to costco yet?

Costco should be fine but please use good judgement and strongly consider shooting at either Boston Market or The Firestone lot. Truth be known these are actually better locations for the early afternoon sun this time of year. This was shot at Firestone.

Not only that but using different spots from time to time will be good cause we won't be in the same spots all the time and we won't get the attention of certain managers. So move around a bit and watch where that sun is I think you will begin to see that Costco is more of a late day summer spot than to the place to always run to when 31R is in use.

Well, this is as close to the Trump 727 as I got  Although I did get to watch it take off from 13. Was really nice to see a 727 take off again, I haven't see one of those in a long time.

Is it me or did I elongate(spelled correctly?) these edits?

Bellucciman, are you still using free-transform for resizing? If you insist on that method, in order to constrain proportions (which is ESSENTIAL), hold down the SHIFT key before you drag the free transform and it will "lock" the proportions.

Let me know how that works out for you. :)

Hi Mel,

I'm using the crop tool and then resizing the image to 1024x683. I'm trying to go in close when I crop. Is there a better method? I'll try the free transform method as you suggested and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks

Mike

No, the free transform mode is def NOT the best, but because of the distortion in your photos and what you've mentioned in the past, I assumed you were using that method.

I don't understand how you're getting such distortion if you're using the crop tool and resizing.

Try making sure that the "constrain proportions" box is checked when you're resizing the photo.

I usually don't have constrain checked when I crop. It keeps the image size at 1024x683. When I do check it the proportions go all over the place. I think it may be a matter of how I'm cropping the image. I try to get a full frame when I take the shot but a lot of times I'm farther away than I'd like to be. I'll try a few things with the A319 shot and re-post the results.

Man I'm so pissed! My dad and I where going to go spotting today but we changed our minds for some reason I can't remember now.

Would have been a perfect day to finally try my 80-400mm in beautiful weather!

Bellucciman: is that a AA 757-300? I didn't know they have them. Was it directly bought from Boeing or some other arrangement?

T-Bird76
2007-01-07, 10:15 PM
No that's a former TWA 200 series, AA does not operate any 300s. The cropping stretched out the picture.

I ended up getting out to MacNeil park on Saturday since LGA was landing on 22. Around 11/11:30, the sun was great; then, clouds started to set in and around noon, when it looked more overcast on the horizon, I hopped back in the car and decided to drive out near FRG to see if anything was going on (since I haven't been out that way in a while). I was hoping it would be a busy day there, but all was quiet so I headed over by JFK, which was using the 31s. I peeked around for anyone else, but didn't see anyone. I parked by the Firestone for a couple of minutes, but it seemed like everything was coming in on 31L (and I missed the EOS as I was driving down Rockaway Blvd. D'oh!) so I decided to call it a day and enjoy some daylight back in Hoboken.

I finally got around to processing and uploading my photos, which are the first I've shot in RAW. They're all LGA arrivals.

There's the Delta 777 Phil... not the going long wing flex we'd get from the AA (and used to get from the UAs..but a bank shot none-the-less.. :)
