SWF or HPN, Which is Better?

I am thinking about taking my mother to upstate New York to visit her family. We can either fly to SWF or HPN. In terms of weather delays, diversions, and cancellations, which airport is better to fly to?

I would say SWF. The airport has less traffic then HPN and things will move quicker, the airport also see's less diversions, cancellations, and delays considering the airport itself is a diversion airport.

It depends where "family" is. I'm partial to HPN since it is my home base, but it is very convenient and easy to get in/out of and there are many flights on a daily basis.

We would be coming from Orlando, FL. HPN is cheaper right now at $79 each way while JetBlue (MCO-SWF) is $99 to and $89 from. I suppose that financially it would be wiser to use AirTran's MCO/HPN service.

I've taken AirTran 673 from MCO to HPN numerous times and it has been nothing short of convenient for a fairly low cost. It is really easy to get in/out of HPN and the service on AirTran is always great (I've never had any delays on TRS at HPN). It depends on the day, but AirTran also offers Web Specials with fares as cheap as $59 each way.

Were in the Hudson Valley are you planning on going? SWF is about 30-40 minutes further north then HPN which might be easier. Another reason to go with jet Blue and SWF is that, as I am sure you know, jet Blue offers leather seats and Direct TV unlike Air Tran.

Well Paterson is about 32 miles from SWF and 35 miles from HPN however the driving time from HPN to Patterson is about 8 minutes less.

Both roads to Patterson are pretty direct so it really comes down to the fare, airline, and times of flights.

2:10 pm Arrive Newburgh, NY (SWF)

6:35 pm Depart Orlando, FL (MCO)

jet Blue offers leather seats, xm radio, directTV, and A320s to an airport with less traffic.

Air Tran offers xm radio, 717s, and a $10 less fare into a more busy airport with longer lines probably.

Yes, however the majority of the operations at HPN are bizjets, not airline flights.

I've never had to wait on a long line at HPN in the past few years. When I took TRS from HPN to MCO for the NBAA convention in October, I went through security in less than 5 minutes and the flight was right on time, we even landed 15 minutes early.

Correct. I believe a few carriers are trying to make SWF the "4th major NYC airport" but I don't currently know the status of that goal.

I have used both and amazingly live in Patterson NY !!!! Depends if you need a hire car or not. I think HPN has a better service on that side but if you are getting picked -up then I think it would be hard to chose between either. Probably just depend on your schedule compared with the timetables.
