Boeing Co. is redesigning some parts on its new 787 jetliner to take out 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of weight, the company said Monday.

A second challenge is the plane's schedule, said Mike Bair, vice president and general manager of Boeing's 787 program.

Boeing has put contingency plans in place to bring some work in-house if needed, Bair told reporters on a conference call Monday morning.

Despite the challenges, Bair said the aircraft will be delivered to customers on time.

Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, which is building the 787's forward section, is on time and on schedule, Bair said.

"We're really pleased with where they're at and what they're doing," he said.

Boeing is making good progress on the plane, Bair said. The company is pleased with its overall performance, he said.

The 787 is scheduled to enter service in May 2008.

The plane is sold out until 2013. It is the most successful launch of a new jetliner program, Bair said.
