De-Icing Hangar/Tent at JFK

The new hangar off the Van Wyk (JFK expressway, right side, past Building 14) where the military choppers were this wkend. Is that really a De-Icing Hangar and for who? VIP aicraft?

Its for all the planes.. It hasn't been used yet. That place is also used as a staging area for VIP aircraft as well. I guess there enough space over there to have both now.

Yes it is a de-ice facility, should be fully operational in August. (OK, I'm kidding about that last part!)

Actually, how does it work? Will it spray fluid on the jets, or does it work like an Easy-Bake Oven and melt the ice?

Interesting, I was wondering what that thing was. Are all planes going to have to taxi all the way over there for deicing, or will there still be conventional deicing as well?

The Port Authority is trying to reduce the amount of conventional deicing that takes place at JFK. Managing all the runoff is a major headache they would like to avoid. In addition to this infrared facility, they are also installing a glycol recovery system at the terminals as they get updated. This skims off the glycol and sends it all to one central processing facility where it gets shipped out of the airport. I believe the above to true to the best of my knowledge.

Well at the rate that I heard that they are trying to charge I think that many companies will continue to de-ice the way that has been working for the longest.

to be honest, and i deice with glycol, i think the infrared system is definately much cheaper in the long run than using and buying tons of glycol each winter.
