AVA3030 arrived at JFK at 6:42am this morning with an MD-83 type.
Glad it was in old colors as well.

You got that one out of the way quickly Senga. :)
I believe one or two are already in the new colors as well, so even better!
Do you know where it is flying from to JFK? Is there a stop in Miami?

Tom,
It came straight from the land of civil, unrest Bogota, Colombia (SKBO)!!!!!!!!
I didn't know that MD-80 type had the range.
I only new it was coming in today because I came accross the aircraft type on redone.

Nice shot Senga! I've gotta get out to see those birds. Did they stop sending their 767?

It is pretty amazing. I just looked it up on Great Circle Mapper... BOG-JFK is exactly 1nm shorter than LAX-JFK, 2,474nm to 2,475nm. BOG-JFK, however, is nearly a straight north-south line, so it isn't affected much by the jetstream. I guess an MD-83 could do LAX-JFK without a problem, but would have difficulty with JFK-LAX.

This is absolutely stretching the maxium range of the MD-83 which is just a hair over 2500 miles. It wouldn't surprise me if there was weight restrictions imposed on this route, or perhaps a tech stop.

This flight may become a regular at some NE area airports when it has to divert for fuel on a regular basis !

It's not a BOG flight, it's operating BAQ-JFK-BAQ 3x week. The BOG is still B767-300 & B757 mix, while MDE is B757.
JFKBAQ is listed as 2183. Nice to see the AV MD-80's back at JFK, it's been a (long) while.

Yesterdays came from (SKBO) Bogota, Colombia . The normal route is (SKBQ) Barranquilla, Colombia.
When were the MD-80s in NYC last?

Just noticted the flt# you listed (AVA3030) and that's certainly not a regular AV flight for BOG, MDE or BAQ.
Last time I shot an AV M80 at JFK it was late 90's, 96 or 97 I believe.

I remember when they were flying 707's and 742's. The Av 742 was one of my faves. That and the TransAmerica DC-10 and 742.
