Does anyone know when Aerolineas Argentinas started bringing back the 742 to JFK? Yesterday while spotting along comes a classic 742. I searched A.net and JP.net databases and the last 742 shot at JFK was more then three years ago. It certainly was the highlight of the day for me, in-fact the last time I was at JFK we caught a PIA 742 aswell. Always great to see these classic birds in passenger service.

I don't know when they started with the 747, but their website confirms that this is now the regular plane for several of the flights during the week. There is still at least one A340 flight during the week, though.

Was the PIA that you saw a 742 or a 743? I believe the 743 and the 772 rotate throughout the week. I haven't seen a PIA 742 at JFK, although a quick scan of a.net shows that Eric got a picture of one at JFK in March '05 (AP-BAT).

Graet shot, Tommy. It's been said here before that the 747s seem to be dwindling at JFK...I remember when Iberia classics and KLM and Air France -400s were regular...not too long ago, actually!

The PIA 742's something I'll want to keep an eye out for, though. Nice catch. :)

747s at JFK had nowhere to go but dwindle in number.

Forget where I read it, but at one time, well into 747 production, someone figured out a quarter of the entire fleet was at JFK any given afternoon.

Probably impossible to remember all the operators, but just a brief list:

Olympic, Alitalia (3 a day at one point), Avianca, Varig, Aerolinas, Aer Lingus, TAP, Sabena, SAS, UA, NW, National, Delta, Tower, SwissAir, Pan Am, TWA, Luftansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, South African, Viasa, Braniff, El Al,
PIA, Iberia probably forgetting some.

JFK was pretty interesting in the way it was dominated by 707s and DC-8s in the late 60s/early 70s (seemed about 75%-90%) of the traffic and then over to 747s/DC-10s/Tri-Stars dominating. DC-9s and 727s were few and far between for years..until Pan Am converted to a very large 727 operation.

But anyway, nothing like now..with 757s, regional jets you can see anywhere else...

Here's a shot of the Aerolineas Argentinas bird coming on in 31R. I was very excited to see her. I can't remember the last time I saw Aerolineas Argentinas and let alone a classic 747!

Nice to see the Aerolineas Argentinas 747-200 back at JFK, it reminds me of last year when I lived in Madrid and would always see an Aerolineas Argentinas 747-200 operating the EZE-MAD-EZE along with a 747-400.

I am guessing that Aerolineas sent the A340-200 to MAD on the days that the 747-200 came into JFK, thus sending the 747-200 which would normally operate the MAD route?

On a side not it looks like Air France will bring back the 747-400 in the summer.

Although it looks like the A340-200 is coming back.

don't forget TMA (Lebanon) brilliant green and yellow 747-200Fs that rivaled Braniff for color in the 70s.
