Anyone heading out this weekend? I have two friends of mine from PA coming up the night before (which is a great excuse for us to get rid of a keg and a half of beer!) and they really want to shoot some JFK ops, so we're going to do just that on Saturday. It looks like this weekend will be a CAVU weekend (clear and visibility unlimited). However, I need to go to the Met on Sunday to take care of a project for one of my classes, so Sunday is out for me.

Anyone else interested?

Steve,

I would have meet up with you guys on Saturday, however The New York International Airline Show is at LGA's Marriot Courtyard from 9:00am to 4:30pm. I will be there with Phil.

I'm actually coming to NY (from Boston) for the weekend and thought it would be cool if I could go spotting at JFK. But I'll be honest, I have no prior experinece and no "proper" equipment. I just wanted to get a feel for it and enjoy some take-offs and landings in good company. So if anyone is willing to share their knowledge, let me know!! I'm not sure about Saturday (it's still up in the air for me) but I'm definitely free on Sunday. -Ilya

Today goes down as the absolute worst spotting day I have ever had. I didn't get stoppped or arrested or questioned (other than arriving at Bayswater like I explained in the Spotter Blotter). To start things off, JFK was using the 22s. I had suggested to my friends that LGA was also using 22 all day and that I had never done 22 work there before. But, they had their hearts set on JFK. No big deal. Drove to the mounds...they're still fenced off (oh, does that fence need to be 15 feet high?). Then I callled Mike McLaughlin (thanks a bunch!) who gave me directions to Bayswater, told me I'd be shooting 22R departures, which was nice. They seem closer than at Howard Beach and the jet noise is insanely cool! Then after about 3½ hours at Bayswater, we decided to get something to eat. McDonalds was packed, so I made the decision to show them LGA. Seeing 22 departures was absolutely amazing! That's about all I got to say there.

Now we go into the vehicular side of things. Last week I discovered a leak somewhere in my coolant system when I came home. I made it back to New Brunswick fine and without anything eventful. I filled up the reserve coolant tank a bit this morning before we left, and had no problems until we left Bayswater for Planeview. I was out on the park for less than a minute when one of my friends calls me to tell me there's smoke (well, maybe steam) coming out of the hood. I get over there, and there's a giant stream of coolant running down the curb. I lifted the hood, let all the steam or smoke billow out and stayed there thinking what the hell I got into. I took some time out to get some departures, but my mind was elsewhere and I didn't feel like taking any more pictures. I had carried extra coolant with me just in case, put that in the radiator, which leaked out immediately. I put some coolant in the reserve but that did no good. We decided to try to get back to New Brunswick without any stops, but my temperature gauge rose faster than the space shuttle and parked in some residental neighborhood like six blocks from Planeview.

I called a cab and got the three of us out to Penn Station... that cost $38. I called a tow truck company and was going to get it towed at the time but they wouldn't take the three of us at once, and my friends didn't want to take a cab and to Penn Station on their own (they also had little cash on them), so I have to meet up with the tow truck guy tomorrow to get it towed to New Brunswick. It kinda works out for me because I have to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art tomorrow to do a project for my Art History class, so I suppose I could take the subway to somewhere near LGA and then grab a cab to the truck and show the driver where it should be dropped off. Luckilly for me, the place I'm dropping it off at back here is two blocks from my house. My dad says it could either be a leak in the hoses or maybe my water pump going bad.

The tow truck is going to cost me at least $330, including taxes and tolls and I'd imagine getting the truck fixed will cost the same amount. And I don't have that to spare!

Steve,

You dont drive a black Xa do you? When I got to Plainview Park today, about 1230, there was a guy in a black Scion Xa parked in front of me with the hood up. All I know about car maintenance is oil change at the dealer every 3750 miles, and their service program, or I would have offered assistance. Did you get any good shots at least?

Unlike Steve, I have to say I had a pretty good day. Met 2 of the gang here totally by accident, Tom Turner @ LGA (Planeview Park) and Moose135 @ JFK (North Woodmere Park then Costco). So, 3 different areas, 3 different distances for shots, here are a few samples, some of the better ones. When I got home and realized I had taken 198 shots I almost passed out!

From Planeview Park:

Thanks Joe! Lighting was a lot better yesterday vs. the previous time I went 2 weeks ago. I didnt have to play with the color on most of them, just crop and slightly sharpen.

I just love this one - a great color scheme, and a short, stubby little look:

And finally, one last shot as the NCPD pulled up:

A good day - got to meet another member, spent a nice afternoon outside, and ended up with 4 more in the JetPhotos database!
