Delta Announces Major Seattle Expansion With New Flights to China, Japan and New York

Delta Air Lines on Monday announced a significant service expansion at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport which will include new flights to China, Japan and New York, a new Sky Club lounge and expanded connection opportunities with codeshare partner Alaska Airlines.

The Atlanta-based airline said that it had applied with the US Department of Transportation for authority to operate flights from Seattle to both Shanghai and Tokyo-Haneda Airport. Both routes would be operated aboard 208-seat Boeing 767-300ER jets. Pending government approval, Seattle-Haneda would launch March 31, 2013, while Seattle-Shanghai would begin June 17, 2013.

Delta also announced plans to upgrade its Seattle to Tokyo-Narita flights to 367-seat Boeing 747-400 aircraft beginning June 1, 2013. The route is currently served by Airbus A330-300 jets.

One of the more fascinating changes: Seattle flights out of New York-JFK will be upgraded to the same in-flight amenities as those found on the airline’s flagship transcontinental flights from JFK to San Francisco and Los Angeles. (We noticed inconsistencies in the product between aircraft types in our Delta Economy Comfort review.) In addition, a fifth daily nonstop between JFK and Seattle will begin flying on June 1, 2013. All flights will be split between the 767-300ER and the 757-200.

Delta flights from Seattle to Paris, Beijing and Osaka will also see upgrades in the way of the interiors of the Boeing 767-300 aircraft that currently serve the routes. The new seats will include full flat-beds in BusinessElite and other “upgraded amenities.”

A new Sky Club is coming to SeaTac as well, in addition to expanded ticket counters, lobby renovations and other improvements, the airline said.

The Delta improvements will also benefit Alaska Airlines customers, who are able to connect to Delta flights with a single itinerary and earn Alaska Mileage Plan miles aboard Delta flights.
