Opened in 1939, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the smallest in size of the three airports serving the New York City area, and is the closest airport to midtown Manhattan. It was originally known as New York Municipal Airport, but later renamed after former New York City mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1947 in honor of his efforts to build the airport. LaGuardia services are restricted by a 1,500 mile perimeter rule implemented by the Port Authority in 1984 to prevent overcrowding. Flights to or from the airport may not exceed 1,500 miles in length, with the exception of Denver, which was grandfathered in. The rule does not apply on Saturdays. |
