A sad start to the Memorial Day weekend...

The P-47D Thunderbolt "Jacky's Revenge" crashed into the Hudson River last night, killing the pilot, 56-year-old Bill Gordon. The plane belongs to the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale, and was taking part in a publicity shoot for this weekend’s Bethpage Airshow at Jones Beach. The pilot brought the plane down in the Hudson Rover, making a successful crash landing, but couldn’t get out of the safety harness and was dragged underwater along with the plane.

    RIP Bill

Just an awful tragedy!! Hopefully they make an announcement at the air show and have a moment of silence!! Maybe one of the teams will fly a Missing Man formation!! Didn't know the pilot but as an aviation enthusiast and having seen that aircraft flying numerous times it's just very sad!! Condolences to his family and friends and all his colleagues at the AAM!!

From the American Airpower Museum's Facebook Page:

    To our FB Friends,
The Large and extended family of the American Airpower Museum suffered a tragedy on Friday. An extraordinary pilot who understood the powerful message our aircraft represent in telling the story of American Courage and Valor died after bringing our P-47 Thunderbolt to a forced emergency landing in the Hudson River. Bill Gordon was a nationally respected Pilot in our Warbird Community and we are honored to call him one of our own. The FAA and appropriate agencies will determine the reason for the inflight emergency and accident therefore please understand that as a result we will limit our public statement at this time. For the Past 16 years the Thunderbolt has been a potent symbol of our museum, a keystone to our public presentations here and throughout the north east. It is our commitment to Bill, our fraternity of pilots, docents, and ground personnel that our mission will continue, our focus undiminished in presenting these historic aircraft to the new generation so that they better understand our nation's fight to preserve and protect our freedoms. The Museum will stay open this Memorial Day Weekend, we will stand down from Jones Beach airshow operations today and will perform a salute and missing man tribute to our dear friend and pilot Bill Gordon today with the help of our fellow Jones Beach airshow performers. In doing so we keep alive the spirit of what we all hold dear. Our concern right now is making sure the family of our fallen friend, pilot, and colleague is cared for, and our extended Airpower Museum Family. We dedicate the remainder of the weekend's flying in Bill's honor.
Thank you for your support, and sympathies.

I was @ the beach today. They did the show out of the order listed. There were no warbirds. Geico did a missing man formation. The announcer asked for a moment of silence during the missing man formation, and the entire beach was silent. It was a nice tribute. RIP

The schedule changed for the HF today and was actually performed later on in the show around 1PM.

Thats why I said it was tentative.

Rob Reider is the announcer, his 12th year I believe doing this show.

They announced at at the show beginning that the AAM warbirds were standing down today. Even though it was anticipated I left it in the schedule just in case.

Geico Skytypers closed their performance with a missing man formation

The plane looks pretty intact and sits now on the end of the barge of the Downtown Heliport. Will be there a few days before being sent down to Delaware according to the news report I just saw.

BA#5 had mechanical issues and went directly back to FRG after the show.
As Gerard posted, Fat Albert ( BA#10) departed at 5:30 to go pick up parts
and I heard it should be returning around 9PM tonight.

10? That right? Oh that's Bert.

they had been having mechanical issues all weekend. They have changed plane numbers several times and have been doing work on the Tarmac quite a bit. At one point yesterday here were two 1s and the two seater went from 7 to 2 and I think 5.

I was saddened to find out the news of P-47 Thunderbolt "Jacky's Revenge" forced emergency landing in the Hudson River and the fate of pilot Bill Gordon. Bill Gordon expertly landed the P-47 on the water / saving the aircraft for future generations / whether it fly's again or is on static display. Thank You & GodSpeed Bill Gordon.
