Phoenix Area (PHX/GYR) Dec 20 & 23: Cargo, Tankers, and a Retirement or Two

    Hey Guys,

My Arizona adventure continued after Tucson. On our way up to Phoenix after hitting Pima Air and Space Museum, I noticed a pair of China Southern 777s were making their retirement flights into KGYR. While I got screwed by the first one who took the opposite runway of all other landing traffic, I bagged #2. Scary to think a 17 year old 777 is at roads' end.

Then, after a few days of errands, I was invited to join the Arizona Aviation Photographers, AZAP, for a morning out at KPHX. What a blast we had! I stayed for about 4 hours, and here is some of the days' haul.

Love the new livery, and it looks great in the pre-sunrise dawn light

This yellow beast was a great treat!

Highlight of the day came early. I saw this big colorful tail taxiing and I knew it could only be one thing! I had wanted this jet since I saw photos of it a while back, and to get it less than 30 minutes into being back at PHX was fantastic. She received a water cannon salute upon landing, I can only assume it was a fini flight for a member of the crew.

While relocating to our next spotting location, I saw what could only be a US Airways 757 in the new AA livery. A bit of coordination with my fantastic driver made this shot possible through the open window of our moving truck

The tower at PHX is sharp looking for sure!

I guess these scimitars are becoming more commonplace because I have seen a lot of them at LAX and PHX as of late

    And continue with part 2...

In terms of normal airline traffic, US 757s were the priority of this trip, and I got a few to be pleased with.

I just love these AA liveried 757s, so excuse another one!

This Brasilia turned nice and tight off of the runway for us

A little taste of Dallas followed me to Phoenix, with this AA 767 bringing a bowl team into town, or picking one up... I am not enough of a College Football buff to know really.

No winglets, bit of an oddity in the NG world these days

Now that WN is changing their colors, I was happy to bag a few "old" livery 738s to remember them by

Great set of shots, Nick! Love the light out there. I've been wanting to go to PHX for a while now, probably time to make it happen!

Great set! I haven't back to Tucson in along. I need to make it there just to see the Pima air museum and get a little spotting in. The light and colors there a breathe taking.

Great shots Nick! Wan't sure by your comment on the SX/HV 737 but it's a winter lease. A lot of European stuff comes over to Canada and the US for winter. At one time a lot of US stuff went the other way for European summer season, but it doesn't happen as much now. I remember years ago at MAN we had a Pluna B732 for the whole summer operating for Britannia Airways (now Thomson or TUI). We also had a Minerva DC8 one day. Airtours spoiled it for the English/European spotter by chartering 2 or 3 clapped out 747-200's for long haul flying. They were so bad one got nicknamed the flying pig by the British press!

Great shots! I was a few miles away over in Papago park and was watching the same planes as you. The park is just a little too far for my 300mm lens. I just applied for the Arizona forum you mentioned since I am out in AZ for the winter. We are a mile south of Mesa airport.

SCY almost didn't do any leases with Transavia they have a huge fleet now. 821 is getting winglets and should ne in service next week. I would be surprised that after they return ZG they ever lease from them again. PHX is always a treat I love shooting there

Thank you guys for the kind words! I also appreciated the info on the Sun Country/Transavia arrangement, and the history of those kinds of swap.
