Damn I didn't know QF got so many specials. Sydney is now on my wish list.

I know, Fasil! I swear they are multiplying, scored another one today. No idea where they are all coming from...

Thanks for sharing. Magnifico ! These are planes we can only dream about here at JFK. Were all the shots from the SYD observation deck? Are they closing it? If so, any reason? Is it for security or for economical reasons?

Thank you all for the kind words. Speedbird, only my first post in this thread has photos from the old observation deck. They have only told us it was closed for "operational reasons". We have no idea what that truly means.

Time for this weeks update, a bit early since I doubt I will be back out after 3 separate trips to the airport this week (and I will confess they left me so exhausted that I willingly passed on a corporate 757 and SQ's Star Alliance 773 in the past two days )

So, from Monday. Just a get together with some locals at Shep's Hill, which was a good time. Also got to check out a few new locations on the east side of the airport.

    Another special for you, Fasil

Oh Look, Fasil, I found another one!

An impressive takeoff, headed for Melbourne

    My first Air Canada heavy

    An exercise in perspective

Another short takeoff roll, this time for Auckland

It is similarly impressive how quickly a completely empty 777F will climb

While the light had soured somewhat, I managed to check out a location for 34R departures, and snagged these two

    So endeth part 1...

    And so beginneth Part 2...

Tuesday, the locals had invited me to accompany them down to Canberra to photograph a very rare and exciting visitor, their first ANA 77W. While I had admittedly shot ANA 77ws at no less than 3 other airports, I was more than excited for the 3 hour roadtrip, and decided to tag along. As some of you may know, Canberra is the Australian capitol city, but unlike Sydney, it has a much smaller airport, seldom visited by much more than the semi-weekly QF 763 (although that famous video of the Ilyushin IL-76 using every inch of runway was actually filmed at CBR).

The reason for the trip, dwarfing everything else on the field

    The highlight for me

And now, for the grand finale...

At this point I feel the need to provide a small bit of back story for context here. Two weeks ago, I had signed up to be a subject in some silly on campus experiment for some economics post-grad on that Friday. Thursday afternoon, upon observing that Friday was set to have immaculate weather, I remarked to a friend in Dallas that A6-EHJ, Etihad's infamous Formula One jet was guaranteed to fly in the next day, seeing as I could not make it. True to form, I got a flightaware alert no more than 20 minutes later. Suffice it to say I was slightly peeved to have missed EHJ yet again.

Fast forward to the ride home from Canberra, where I recounted this story for the benefit of the group. After finishing, one of them simply asked, "well, what is she doing tomorrow?". Low and behold, she was scheduled back into SYD for the following morning (my alert somehow had failed, gee thanks flightaware) and she was inbound, running late enough to ensure it would be well lit when she arrived. Despite having risen early 2 days in a row to go out shooting, and only having time for about 3 hours of sleep before I needed to catch a bus, I decided to give it a shot and chase EHJ. It turned into quite the morning...

Singapore Cargo at the literal first light of day

So excited to be flying on one of these beasts with SQ in a few short week's time

Just about one more week until these beauties give way to 777s in SYD

Another sight that is soon to bow out of SYD's skies

Those appear to be charts and maps shoved into the cockpit windscreen to block the sun

And last but certainly not least, and even though Jared may never want to speak with me again , here is A6-EHJ at long last.

Suffice it to say that after this I basically passed out, and have found the idea of going back out to be a bit much to take for this week.

    Until next time,

    Cheers!

Time for another update from Sydney. It's been a somewhat more quiet week, with weather and increasing classwork conspiring to keep me too tired to spot, but here are some keepers from the past 10ish days

As some of you may have seen, 747-400ERs VH-OEH and OEJ are wearing deals near the L1 door for the 2014 MLB season opening season (which I was there for ) Might see one of them in NYC before the decals disappear. Also my first instance of shooting a jet that I know I have flown on, which was cool.

Was very pleased to try a new location, and catch this SQ 772 landing in the afternoon

    Love these little guys

    Very late arrival from Nadi

And sadly even though Etihad's 77W was running early, she couldn't quite make it with light. Landing seconds after sunset...

    Until next time, cheers!

Time for my weekly update from SYD. Sadly I took rather ill with the flu this week, which put paid to my plans to travel in Thailand for spring break. After being laid up in bed for several days, I finally managed to get up and out for a few hours, and I think I made the best of it!
