This will be a multi-post thread as I slowly go through my last trip to Vegas:

Great photos!! I'm thinking about going to LAS in the future. Do I need to rent a pickup truck for taking photos of the airplanes?

    Happy Holidays!

Interesting shot of the janet bird. Was she landing long or were you further east on sunset? (neat set!)

    Thanks

The fence is ~ 8 feet tall. You need something the size of a Ford Explorer or taller to stand on. A pickup truck bed won't get you high enough, but you'd be fine standing on the roof. Something to consider is renting a smaller car and going by Home Depot and buying a multi-fold ladder. Obviously you can return it if you take care of it.

For the Janet shot I was at the intersection of Thomas & Mack Dr. and Paradise Rd looking through some power lines to get that shot.

Steve tried my 4' ladder on the bed of the pickup he rented and that didn't last long, I think he complained about it being unstable or something like that.

Most midsize SUVs will do, you just need to know exactly where to stand so the roof doesn't cave in.

For a car: something as simple as a firm cutting board might help. You can easily put it in a suitcase, and it should be big enough to spread the force out a bit.

Yeah, the ladder in the truck bed did not give a good feeling of stability. However, I had no problem standing on the top rails of the bed against the back of the cab. From there I still had the very top of the fence in the shots, but nothing blocking the aircraft. Eventually by the final day I just climbed up on top of the truck cab and then kicked out the dents prior to returning the rental.

The majority of the photos in this thread are 2048px wide.

As someone who rarely sees the 800's these just look weird.
