Newark Airport Family Day: October 5th 2013

The Port Authority will be once again hosting the annual Airport Day festivities, with this year's events scheduled for October 5th. This is probably your best chance to spot at EWR with zero problems from security. Last year, a couple of us even spent most of the day chatting with an FJC guard while we took all the pictures that we wanted. Last year there was free food, a United 767-400 to tour, tons of airport equipment and GA Aircraft to get up close with, de-icing bucket rides, and much more.

I'll update this post as the event gets closer and more details are announced.

    Update 8/29:
Here's a link to the Plane Pull portion of the event which benefits the Special Olympics. That page mentions that the Plane Pull starts at 8:00 am. Hat tip to Seth Miller for passing this along.

Update 9/3: Here's the thread with the info from last year's event.

Update 9/29: Here's a flyer from the Special Olympics with directions and instructions for the event.

Update 10/2: From the Port Authority on twitter: "The event: a plane pull, petting zoo, aircraft and other equipment displays, food and giveaways." From the Special Olympics: the plane pull begins at 8am.

Thanks Ben. I'm going to try and convince "the boss" that this would be good for me to attend.

Any chance that a 787 might be on hand this year instead of the 767-400 ?
You will never know what you will be capable of until you try

I'm not sure if there's a bus (there might be), but you can definitely take a NJ Transit train to the EWR Airtrain station.

If you take the PATH train to Newark Penn, the NJ Transit bus N62 from there will take you to EWR

Just a reminder, Family Day is coming up this Saturday and the weather so far is looking good. I've updated the top of this thread with a link to the directions to the event. Unfortunately, PANYNJ doesn't seem to put out a ton of information on the Family Day portion of the events, but the Special Olympics does for the plane pull side of things which runs concurrently. While I have no reason to believe that the hours of Family Day are any different from last year (9-3), it looks like the shuttle busses in will be available starting at 6AM should anybody want to get there that early. Remember if you drive that you need to have your parking validated inside the event. Last year, the table for that was just past the security check.

Without a United 787 regularly serving EWR these days, I would think that its probably not likely.

Here's a map of where we were last year. Arrivals were on the 4s last year which made those shots a bit tricky though we got plenty of nice taxiing shots. Arrivals on the 22s would make for some excellent touchdown shots from that location. Several of the GA aircraft used 11/29 to arrive and depart and that runway is just a few hundred feet in front of that location.
