Close Call For A Delta 747 and Shuttle America E170- What Really Happened?

Early Friday morning, news started to spread about that the FAA was investigating a “near miss” that occurred between between a Delta 747 and a Shuttle America Embraer E170 on June 13th. According to WABC in New York, one account has the two aircraft coming within 100 feet of each other, quite a dubious claim [...]

Extremely unusual events, such as 2 simultaneous go-arounds, call for unusual responses. It was handled well by ATC.
I have talked to a few mainstream media outlets, and they kept trying to steer their stories to blame ATC. I wouldn't let them.

But it's still worthy of a story, right? Good job setting the record straight.

I personally am ok with it being a story...regardless of reasoning, separation minimums WERE violated. But as stated, there was no DANGER as it seems all were in control and aware.

I do still wonder why the controller had the Delta turn left. The go around procedure for 4R tells aircraft to turn right to Deer Park and the go around procedure for 4L has aircraft maintain runway heading for some time....this was made to specifically accommodate these situations and should have been left as is. But, I don't know what else may have been happening that had the controller do that.

My only issue lately with media is that they want to CREATE NEWS as opposed to REPORTING IT... that just seems completely out of control now. Take CNN... :20 minutes of real news reporting and the rest of the 23:40 hrs MAKING IT UP with shows that simply tell the viewer what they feel or believe... SMH!

A 777 (I believe Transaero?) had just taken off 4L, so a stright out go-around was not possible. Because the AA 737 went around on the right side, a right turn was also not available. The only other available direction was left...or straight up or down if it were a space ship!
